Advice needed using ignition spark tester

I've got a spark tester and would like to check the spark on my new to me '93 25 hp. In reading a few other posts it sounds like a spark that jumps a 7/16" gap is healthy. My question is how do I conduct teh spark test? Do I test one plug at a time while the motor is running on the other plug? I'm sure the procedure is pretty simple but I just want to be sure I don't burn out a coil or do any other damage.

Thanks!

No, you simply bump electric start or pull rope start to rotate engine enough to fire on that wire.

Test for spark with all plugs removed. Be sure to get a good ground on your test device.

The idea is to have no load on the engine so that you maximize the spark.

You will probably not reach 7/16" on a rope start, but the spark should be snappy and blue in either case.
