Hi there! I just joined this site tonight, and obviously my name is Mike.

I purchased an 18 foot Starbuck Jetboat about two years ago that has 402 Chevy Big Block with Berkeley 12JC Jet pump in it. Runs very well. I do have a bit of fiberglass delamination happening inside the boat in the engine compartment I would like to resolve as soon as possible.

Inside my engine bay, just forward of the engine I have a section of fiberglass that has separated from the wood. This fiberglass delamination peice goes from one side of the boat to the other above the keel area. This area supports the rear of the back bench seat and is separated from where the seat bolts to the floor and where the wood meets the bottom of the hull. I do not appear to have any issues with dryrot...yet...just fiberglass separation with a void between the wood and fiberglass. I plan to use a dremal tool to cut out/off the delaminated fiberglass section, then try to grind down the edge until I find no more separation to get new material to properly bond. I have done gelcoat repairs in the past, but not fiberglass mat repairs.

My question is fairly simple. Should I be using Epoxy with matting to repair this, or using a Poly type resin to make the new matting stick to the wood properly?

I can try either, but want to make sure I do the best patch I can and want to know from somebody that has actually done this type of work to a boat before. Keep in mind this is a fast boat (about 70MPH) and I want the repair to be permanant. It appears the fiberglass matting/cloth was painted blue inside the engine compartment after the original glass work was done. I plan to do the same...I want it to match. I also want it to be strong.

Some helpful advice form somebody in the know would be greatly appreciated.

Mike from Missouri...I pronounce that misery :D

Re: Advice for delaminated fiberglass repair.

welcome to iboats.

The best answer is two part....... epoxy will be a harder on the wallet and gel coat really is not for epoxy.... (not w/o going through some changes)

Either one will do the repair. Epoxy is a bit stronger but that extra strength may not be needed.

Others will chime in....... some will swear by epoxy since it's your money being spent!

Re: Advice for delaminated fiberglass repair.

Thanks for the reply. I don't plan to gelcoat over the top this repair since it is inside the engine bay, and there is no other gelcoat over the top of rest of the glass mat down there. I just plan to repaint blue paint over the top of the area once the repair is dry. I just wasn't sure which formula would penetrate the mat and the wood the best for a strong permanant repair. I have done many gelcoat repairs outside the boat, but never had to do any fiberglass work inside before. I wasn't sure if the epoxy would stick well to the edges of the original poly coat and glass mat/wood or not.

Lots of info on fiberglassing here

From what I have read, Epoxy makes a better bond to old Poly, but I would suggest doing some reading on the subject using the link above.

Good Luck

Re: Advice for delaminated fiberglass repair.

New epoxy sticks to fiberglass but not visa versa. Yes you can use epoxy for repairs and they will be the strongest...... you just can't use fiberglass to repair epoxy with good long term results.

With that much power...... if it was me..... epoxy. Now if you get on the web there are epoxies for sale that are just as good as west systems. There are many sources, iboats, uscomposites, ebay or do a search on the internet ;)

Epoxy and fiberglass cloth and mat go along well together. Post a few pictures.

Yup, I lived in MissourA..... I was stationed at Leonard Wood 3 times.
