Hi there! I just joined this site tonight, and obviously my name is Mike.
I purchased an 18 foot Starbuck Jetboat about two years ago that has 402 Chevy Big Block with Berkeley 12JC Jet pump in it. Runs very well. I do have a bit of fiberglass delamination happening inside the boat in the engine compartment I would like to resolve as soon as possible.
Inside my engine bay, just forward of the engine I have a section of fiberglass that has separated from the wood. This fiberglass delamination peice goes from one side of the boat to the other above the keel area. This area supports the rear of the back bench seat and is separated from where the seat bolts to the floor and where the wood meets the bottom of the hull. I do not appear to have any issues with dryrot...yet...just fiberglass separation with a void between the wood and fiberglass. I plan to use a dremal tool to cut out/off the delaminated fiberglass section, then try to grind down the edge until I find no more separation to get new material to properly bond. I have done gelcoat repairs in the past, but not fiberglass mat repairs.
My question is fairly simple. Should I be using Epoxy with matting to repair this, or using a Poly type resin to make the new matting stick to the wood properly?
I can try either, but want to make sure I do the best patch I can and want to know from somebody that has actually done this type of work to a boat before. Keep in mind this is a fast boat (about 70MPH) and I want the repair to be permanant. It appears the fiberglass matting/cloth was painted blue inside the engine compartment after the original glass work was done. I plan to do the same...I want it to match. I also want it to be strong.
Some helpful advice form somebody in the know would be greatly appreciated.
Mike from Missouri...I pronounce that misery
