Just talked to a builder i know and he mentioned that i use Advantech Ply for the deck of my boat. It is engineered to withstand moisture. I am guessing it is basically osb that is coated in epoxy in the factory.....let me know if anyone has used it before. i hear it's not to expensive. $0.50 a Sqf

That is cheap. around 16 dollars a 4x8 sheet. I would probably still treat to insure true waterproofing.

probably the type of glue used, if just coated, where you cut it would be the weak point as far as moisture.

i sent an inquiry, as to how it will hold up in a marine environment.

Re: advantech plywood

Its an excellent product for house building. I have some thats been outside for over 3 years and is still solid.(not smooth, but solid) I've never tried to stick fiberglass to it, so I can't comment on that side. It is fairly heavy and around here runs between $22-24 per 4x8 sheet.

Re: advantech plywood

for my application i would use probably on 2-3 sheets, and i would either wrap in marine vynl, or roll on bedliner. Also as for it being a problem with alot of water. I only use the boat maybe 100hrs a summer, and it's never left in the water and i have a cover and dry storage spot. so the advantech if not used would be replaced by regular osb.

Re: advantech plywood

I wouldn't use osb on anything on a boat. It obsorbs water then swells and the glue starts failing. If you're going to wrap it in vinyl, the Advantech might be a good thing to use. With vinyl its almost certain that the wood will get wet and stay wet a lot of the time. CDX, PT, and even marine ply won't last as long as Advantech when they're wet. If you decide to fiberglass over it, then any of the other plywood would probably be better.

just for clarification......they would not be able to use epoxy glue at that price.

Re: advantech plywood

I made an inquiry as to marine use. here is the reply.

"Mr. XXXXXX,
The AdvanTech flooring should not be used in this type of application due to the nature of the exposure. AdvanTech flooring carries an exposure 1 stamp for the product which details that although it can be exposed for upto a certain number of days it should not be used in exterior type applications. In this type of application you will want to use marine grade plywood to withstand the elements in this application. If you have any additional questions please feel free to contact us.
Thank you,

Re: advantech plywood

I read through their website documents and it didn't sound like their products were intended for high moisture exposure.

Re: advantech plywood

Well i got the sheets,,,and they are soaked with epoxy...they are tounge and groved and on the tounge it feels almost like a rubber coating...I understand that marine ply has no voids...and the same glue for 60 a sheet...well these are also void free and soaked in epoxy..so whats the difference...
