I figured I would start a new thread on this, as I would like as much input as possible. I am at the point where I am ready to glue the transom in my I/O sea ray and the last time I used PL glue. It is a very large transom and a little uneven, and I was wondering if I should use peanut butter. Does anyone know the pros and cons of either? I know the Pl can bridge some gaps, but would the Peanut butter do it better? I need some input for everyone.

Second question is about stringer thickness. The stock stringers were 1/2" throughout the boat. I do plan on putting the foam back in, but should I bump to a 3/4" stinger, or would the weight and bulk be counter productive?

Am I over thinking this?

No wrong answers here. I would like opinions.

I like PB for transoms. I believe it fills any uneveness much better and leaves less chances for air pockets and voids. As for the stringers. 1/2 inch is gunna be a challenge to wrap with out air pockets in the glass. But with all the foam you're puttin in does it really matter???? Not sure??? Up to you.

Probably overthinking . Soon to be followed by over-discussing it.
You know what to do anyway, bond and clamp/screw it then when cured , glass it.
Get on with it, you have until sundown. tick tick tick..

Raining and cold here, so that is where the over thinking comes from.:D

I was leaning toward the peanut butter thing after reading the hull extension thread again. The only question I have is how you should spread it out on the transom. Do you use a notch trowel or a thick bed?

I recommend a full bed 1/4" on the skin and 1/4" on the transom then clamp em and squeeze it out. Use the squeeze out to fillet in the edges. Use medium clamping pressure. Don't wanna squeeze it all out.

Cool. Thanks for the input.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the way to make Peanut butter is with 1/4" chopped filler and cabosil or micro balloons to the desired thickness?

Now I need to decide on stringer thickness.

I would go 3/4.... like Wood said before 1/2" will be a challenge to wrap and not have air pockets on the tops of the stringers.... I did my stringers and biaxed them to the top but not over and then laid up a few strips of 6oz cloth over the top to cap them.... very few tiny spots formed bubbles. I did make sure ever time I was glassing something I coated the stringer tops with some resin so it would soak in the end grain of the ply well.

Frisco..

How "Uneven" uneven ??

PB is a generic term.. It means self made putty. It can be used with or without glass..with or without Microballons..with or without cabosil.

It depends on what your doing with it.

In this case I personally would NOT add the microB's (blood balloons). That is a "fairing" additive.

Also you might want to drill a dozen or so small holes in the wood before bedding to help air release on larger trans jobs.

When we make pb we just cut choppy in to 2inch wide strips an put them into the containa of resin and work it in to the resin and it falls apart in to single peices of glass and to get it to the right thickness you just add more resin or glass . We always use vinylerester not poly. And for most glass work under water we use epoxy and alway epoxy for wood because it soaks in better.

Too much Resin with Chopped glass IMO .. I have seen/done that And I dont like it.

Just CSM with resin is not only messy..it Pulls out of "Voids, cracks etc. " Way to Easy. Then you have to fill again.

Why not just use the Filler for the recommended application ..

"PB" is a generic term for "NON-LAYUP" .. or better yet a "Filler" ( Self made or out of the can .. its still Filler ) .

If your not using Glass .. then your using some kind of Filler or "PB". .. and there are Many different kinds of Fillers for All given applications ..

Yes Shp .. your Choppy is a little Too Easy ..and for me does nothing more then over resin the glass .. IMHO .. You need the thickening agent .. IMHO again ...

It thickens with the amount of glass you put in,more glass the thicker. It should Not be used for anything structural just for fairing around stuff that isn't that important. It's a lot cheaper then bog or good epoxy filler and it works
