Adding Anchor Roller

My 2000 Key West 20/20DC came from the manufacturer with an integrated Bow Pulpit, but without an Anchor roller. I'd like to install a roller with bolts and a backing plate, but can't reach the front of the pulpit from the only access, the anchor locker. A dealer suggested adhesive and several screws, but I'm concerned about it pulling out without the backing plate. No wood in the top of the pulpit, but the fiberglass is on the thicker side. Any help on how to proceed would be appreciated. The manufacturer got smart and now pre-rigs them on later year models. Thanks.

Wow..talk about a toughy...good post m8.

hmm..Id have to see it really but sounds like your gonna have to cut the pulpit deckside..reinforce throughout the pulpit...recap, then manufacure a wooden pulpit to match....hmm..lemme think about this one some more.

You got some pics ?

YD

Re: Adding Anchor Roller

Heygoody.. Thru the anchor locker, Can you see the area underneath where the roller would mount (see it but just can't reach it), or is there absolutely no access to that area whatsoever?

There's always a way.. ;)

Anywhoo.. Here's a thought for ya.. Done this before..

Make your aluminum backing plate out of 3/8" plate.. Drill and thread/tap all the holes in the plate to match the roller, plus one extra hole in the center of the plate (the extra hole needs not be tapped)...

Drill the holes in the deck to match the backing plate, plus the extra hole...

Use a fish tape thru the extra hole to pull a piece of twine or string to a place where you can reach...

Then, thread the twine thru the extra hole in the plate and tie the end off using a washer or nut (something disposable).. Use the twine to pull the backing plate into position, line up the holes, put down some sealant, then bolt the roller down loose, cut the extra twine off, then finish tightening the bolts...

Re: Adding Anchor Roller

I don't have any pics to post at this time as the boat is in winter storage. I can see underneath where the roller would mount but it is not reachable by about 3 ft. Adhesive and screws a good or bad idea? The boat will be anchored in areas of moderate tidal flow...

Would toggle bolts work here? Depends on how thick the fiberglass is I suppose, that would be quick and easy, we use them everyday to mount huge electrical panels.

-John

Re: Adding Anchor Roller

If you pre drilled everything as said before. But ran the bolts into the bottom of the plate first with Locktite ONLY on the last 4 threads that go into the plate and let them dry. Silicone rubber around the bolts. A 1 X 3 by whatever lenght stick that would fit thru the hole with the plate lightly Siliconed on straight, should also work. 2 person job. If you are fussy. Put it in and leave the stick on. Snug up both plates with 2 nuts and measure and cut studs for SS Acorn nuts. SS studs are hacksawable. Silicone plate edges and stud thru plate holes. Think many times before moving.
