How would i go about adding a Tachometer to my 1984 35hp Evinrude? Can i use a tachometer you can buy at an auto parts store? A small metal one, not one of the huge ones you see on drag cars!

Does the tach need an external power source, or does it use the power to get readings to run? I would assume if it were a lighted tach, it would need an external power supply, but i won't be getting one of those. Thanks in advance.

Re: Adding a tachometer

Take a look at the "tinytach" website. Might be what you're lookin' for.
Otherwise, I recommend a Faria tach for a more permanent setup. You'll need pos and neg 12VDC leads and the sender signal (gray wire from rectifier).
Good luck

actually a tiny tach works very well, google tiny tach. the tach has to be able to work with the 2cylinder 2 stroke, most auto tachs, won't work. contact tiny tach, they will lead you to the correct one for your motor.

would an auto tach work if you double the cylinder switch from say 2-4 on a 2 cyl?

Re: Adding a tachometer

Nope
OMC requires tach capable of accepting a 12 pole / 6 pulse input (send) signal.
