Adding a subfloor to a GlassPar

I have a 1963 16ft GlassPar (Avalon) and I want to add a subfloor (deck ontop of my current floor, which is in great shape) for the sole reason of being able to put in a flush pedestal base. Actually 4 of them. One in each corner of the boat.

Is this practical? I mean, weight being a factor. Is it unusual to put a subfloor in a boat like this?

If it is practical, what material should I use? Do I need to seal all of the material?

Also any references online on how to do this?

Thank you. I appreciate your help.

Just do a small area around each pedastal instead of the whole floor, bond it to the floor and then fiberglass over it.

I see what you are saying with the small piece under the seat.

I am really going for a flush mount. As flush as possible. The idea is I can remove the 3 seats and be able to get around the boat without tripping over the seat posts. If I build up underneath the mount, it kind of defeats the purpose, for me.

Any alternatives to this solution? Is it just not practical to build up the entire floor? Has anybody done that?

The added weight will be a factor in just covering you old floor, but can be done if you want.

You will need to completely cover the new plywood with resin and glass which will add even more weight and cost.

I added pedestal seats to an older boat I had and just screwed into the existing glass over ply floor, it lasted for another dozen years with no issues, then I sold it.

Which type of mount are you looking at, the surface type, or the ones that are recessed into the deck?

Ondarvr -

Thanks. weight is a big concern for me.. I kept thinking it would be to much, but hearing you say it helps.

I am looking to put in these (They require 2.5" below the deck):

Are you thinking that I could mount to the existing floor, if there was room between the hull? Of course I would seal, etc.

How do I go about testing for room? A small whole with a hanger? Or is there a better way?

Thanks,

Yes just drill a small hole, be very careful and use a drill stop if you have one, sometimes the plywood is almost right on the hull.

If there is any room at all under it you should be able to put some kind of a backing plate under the floor to help reinforce it for added strength.

Re: Adding a subfloor to a GlassPar

In my 1965 Avalon I needed to replace the seats the old glass ones were shot, but the area where I wanted to put the seats was unlevel. So I did exactly what you are talking about, added some spacers and a new floor. First I got the old seats out, the old floor was still good so I cleaned it up and used some of the garage floor epoxy, the stuff with the colored chips you add after you put the paint on, on all the interior, looks great. Next I got 5, 8ft long treated 2x2s laid out 3 of them parallel to the sides in the stern the other 2 in the bow like an inverted V, and screwed them all down. Then I got 5 treated 1x4s laid them across the 2x2s spaced every 16 inches and screwed them to the 2x2s. Next I laid out 1/2 inch treated plywood on top of the 1x4s leaving a 1/8 inch gap between the hull and the plywood screwed that to the 1x4s. All screws were stainless, and be carefull not to put any screws in outside the flat part of the original floor, thats the hull! Then I got GOOD Indoor/Outdoor carpet and glued it to the new floor leaving excess on the sides to tuck into the gap between the floor and the hull. Next I was ready for seats, then gear, the family, stuff like that, Only wish the 60HP Johnson would run when I want it to. I'm happy with the boat, and I did get it out this year it planes out just fine even with the extra weight.
Good Luck

Re: Adding a subfloor to a GlassPar

Thanks for sharing. Normally I jump right into this kind of project, but I don't want to break my boat.

I'm gonna go out and spend some time with her today. See what kind of room I have between the current deck and the hull. If there is enough, I will go that route, otherwise, maybe I will lay down a subfloor.

Thanks for your insight.
