Hey All,
After scouring the web for any information regarding the topic, I figured this would be a good place to ask.

I have a 1963 Evinrude 28302A 28 hp, and would like to add an electric starter. Many of these engines came with an electric start installed from the factory. My engine does have a bracket for where the starter would go.
A few questions-
Would my current pull start ring gear be the same as an electric start?
How would that effect the pull start mechanism?

If anyone has ever attempted this I would gladly like to hear some insight!

You need the starter and the starter bracket.----It bolts right on.--You need a choke solenoid and lower carburetor bowl.-----Or install an electric primer as used on Johnson / Evinrude from 1980 on.----A wonderful item used on motors from 9.9 to 300 HP.-----Then just a proper solenoid and some wiring.----Also depends on whether you want remote start or start at the motor on a tiller.----Your location.----Good used parts are readily available if you know how / where to look.

Thanks racerone! Definitely makes this whole process seem a bit less daunting.
Any tips on finding good used parts other than ebay/parts motors from craigslist/facebook?

Too far away for me to help.---You need a starter ( best option ) from say 1965 33 HP to 1970 33 HP.----Or 1965 40 HP to about a 1970 40 HP.

Racerone, the information you provided me has been the biggest help. I truly appreciate it! God bless.

The things that racerone did not mention is that you may have to change the flywheel to one that has sprockets. you should also realize that these old old outboards do not have a charging system so you will have to add a battery and wiring and a starter button on your dash.On my '57 there is also a starter box with a starter wiring harness but that is not crucial

Easiest method is to install a starter button at the transom. Use a covered plastic electrical box from Home Depot for the starter solenoid and button.
