added weight

I recently purchased a 1987 Sea Ray 268 Sundancer and finally got around to cleaning out all the compartments. On the port side approximately center line there was a compartment in which I found what appear to be two 50 lb square dumbbells. This is definitely not stock, it is a sliding storage compartment and not somewhere Sea Ray would have stored ballast. My question is, is there a good reason for it being there or did the previous owner just like to work out while out fishing? I have only had the boat out twice and haven?t even got it on plane yet due to engine troubles. I wasn?t sure if this was a standard practice to correct a listing issue with these boats. I just don?t want to take them out only to find out underway that they are needed. I didn?t have my camera with me today, but I will post pictures tomorrow. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

No and possibly.

I'm sure it was added ballast, possible for heavy coolers, extra battery(s), or whatever. Remove it and start working out with it instead.

Re: added weight

If the weight was on port side, I'd say the previous owner was on the "portly" (pun intended) side and was needing a counterweight.:p

50# weights are easier to work with than concrete shoes.
For one, you don't have to wait for the concrete to set up.
2 - less mess

My 268 will list to starboard unless you have the water tank full. Full tank she sits level.
