A defective ABS is different than blaming on the working ABS system.

I personally do not like the way abs feels on my '97 F150 (working correctly).

I am "old school" taught to drive on snow and ice the old fashioned way. On this particular vehicle I think I can do better then a computer.

I also feel that way. It was all part of knowing how to drive.

Okay...... the truck was finally removed today. The road was clear enough and got a tow truck with twin winches AND a real good operator.

Took a few resets, a few good size trees, pulley, lifting strap and some good old common sense.

Funny part of this story..... last night at 11PM the trucks alarm started going off..... no it was not set.... we suspect it was just lonely and shorted!! :D The neighbor was not happy but understood.

The entire electrical system is whacked. The windshield washer fluid motor started pumping fluid without any reason... nothing electrical worked. We did get the electric plow to lift.... the side of the truck faired not too bad but I suspect it will be totaled. Pic's to come...

Officially totaled. The week it spent on it's side was not healthy for the truck. The main electrical system became flooded combined with the body damage, mileage and all other factors the truck is toast :(

Everything that melted off the bank went straight to the electrical box that was mounted inside the engine compartment on top of the drivers side fender to include the fisher plow control module........ It was essentially under water :(

Glad everyone is ok, the abs on my 00 S10 was to sensitive as well IMO, some pebbles and sand at intersections would make it actuate and would release your stopping power, and thats safe ? 05 Chev 2500 work truck had to sensor corrosion issue and would actuate at EVERY stop at 5mph and your brake power would go bye-bye.

The wrecked truck is newer than I thought in the pictures it looked older and more beaterish rolled over and with no gate. Thats too bad and sad that frames are already rusting out on that style of truck.

Well a good plow set up for someone maybe ?

Yeah it was a 1999...... I do like the plow mechanism.... the fisher with the electric/hydraulic is really really fast reacting compared to my hydraulic pump under the hood on my rig. I would consider his set up but the 9' fisher I push has spoiled me.

I guess I never drove a defective ABS equipped truck. Good stuff, especially on snow and ice.

All abs sucks in the snow.

My ford bronco has it disabled for winter. IMO, abs really is only good for dry or wet conditions.

In the ice or snow when abs turns on (it always turns on too early) it makes it like you're on ice, even if your not!

I'd rather have full four wheel "plowing" effect than NO BRAKES AT ALL. I gotta disable it on my camaro next.

I've driven thousands of miles on ice and snow, with and without ABS. I am really surprised by those that don't like ABS. So much safer to be able to brake and steer when its slick. Watching all the out of control drivers skidding into each other on The Weather Channel this winter makes me wonder if there is any driver training anymore.

I have done the same. I just like having 100% control. If I want the wheels to LOCK UP, I WANT them to do it.

There are situations, in snow where I can tell that even if I lock the wheels up, I will still stop in time. Where as if I had ABS it takes MUCH longer to come to a stop.

Now if I wanted to stay in control, and do not need to go 100% locked up, I can do that myself.

The problem with abs in the snow is that the tires lockup so quickly that ABS almost turns snow into ICE in effect.

For me its not disliking or liking ABS braking. In my opinion ABS is grate on the highway or basically on road driving. In real off road situations ABS can be a real danger due to the wheels may not lock up and stop you.

Now saying that when off-roading your not going 70mph.

Re: ABS+snow over ice with a chevy plow truck

I've driven many vehicles with good ABS brakes, and I appreciate it's effect. When I get into a situation, for instance, where 2 wheels are on ice, and the other 2 are in the traffic strip, I can stop fairly fast and not worry about spinning out. Not only I, but my blonde wife, and inexperienced kid can also stop safely.

If all wheels are on exactly the same surface, it's possible to out stop ABS brakes with skill and experience. On uneven footing, it is not possible in any way to outperform ABS brakes, simply because you do not have independent control of each wheel.

The best save I ever experienced with ABS brakes was at highway speed, about 70, when a bimbo stopped in the left lane in front of me with her right turn signal on. The ABS brakes allowed me to take off a lot of steam just in case she actually started to turn while letting me get around her in full control. I think the brakes were quite effective because I left so much smoke in the intersection you couldn't see through it.

If things are out of adjustment and your brakes don't work right, for safety's sake FIX THEM.

Bob, you never said whether the plow was angled like in the pic and down on the road when he went off.
Just curious,
Mike
