ABS and plowing do not mix well...... The pictures do not do it justice.... it is over an embankment that has a straight 4 1/2' vertical wall hidden by the snow.

The truck is over so far past the halfway point that NONE of the tires are on the ground......... waiting for a guy with a dozer and winch to pull the truck out

Doesn't my 4Runner look pretty sitting all upright on the road....:D

Dude, not cool. Hope you're alright.

On the plus side, now would be a good time to oil up that undercarriage!

Re: ABS+snow over ice with a chevy plow truck

Brings back some fond memories. I used to own a mile long stretch of woods behind the house, and had a redneck buddy living south of it. There was a logging trail through the woods, sometimes used to bring out hay from a swampy meadow south of the woods and north of his place.

The farmer cutting hay lost a big round bail right in the middle of the trail.

I was visiting (drinking) with him one night, and we decided to go to my place. We took off through the woods, three sheets to the wind, me in my 1947 Dodge power wagon that weighed about 9000 lbs, and he in his 1/2 ton ford 4x4. When we got to the hay bail I detoured through a stand of small ironwoods, and he followed. The ironwoods flipped his truck up on it's side about like the one in the picture above.

When you tip it back down, don't forget to check the fluids. (Ask me how I know)

Thats what I was wondering.
It was still giving you as much braking as possible, and should have provided some steering control as well. More than you would get without the abs, right?

Glad you are ok.

That looks close to the year of my truck. If it is like mine the abs is so sensitive that on a slick hill it flat will not stop you. good luck

Re: ABS+snow over ice with a chevy plow truck

FYI No one was hurt.

Not my truck....... I was not in the truck.

It's a 1999 1/2 ton with a 7 -1/2' plow.......

He had 4 very nice studded firestone snows.

That spot on the road has now claimed it's 5th car/truck.

The ABS was overly sensitive. It allows the wheels to slip and not lock up so controlled braking can occur. I had driven the truck earlier that day and commented to my friend that the ABS was screwed up and he should probably "pull the fuse" and have it checked.

If anyone has towed a trailer or had a heavy load with ABS on a snowy/icy hill they will understand what I am talking about.

it sure sounds like the abs worked like it was supposed to and someone was driving too fast for conditions of the road. the truck wasn't designed to be roaded with a 7 1/2' plow on it either. ABS does not stop you faster just straighter.

Well he was plowing. His speed was at a crawl. The ABS kept releasing the brakes and allowed it to slide...... he came off about a 15% grade. I have been driving and plowing for about 35+ years and I have ABS on my 3/4ton.... I think I know when it is not working right.

That 99 chev is rated for that plow and even has the plow package. I would say the truck was designed to be roaded with the plow.

Interestingly a couple of studies done up here in Canada (Ontario, I think) on ABS showed that in snow, and dirt/gravel conditions ABS equipped vehicles took longer to stop than non-ABS vehicles which 'locked up' their tires and used the 'plowing' affect of the road material in front of the tires to hasten stopping.
The tests also showed that on ice and pavement (dry or wet) ABS was the more effective way. Either way, its not quite the magic bullet in snow or gravel conditions that some would have people believe.

ABS is not about stopping distances.

It's about maintaining steering control and rear slide, during hard braking.

It was probably slick enough that ABS or not, probably wouldn't make any difference.

You can still lightly "pump' barkes with ABS.

If the blade was angled like that when he left the road, I'd say the plow hooked too much of the berm and pulled the truck off the road.

Thats a good guess , personally I agree I think the driver was going to fast for the conditions and the icey road + the angle of the plow pushed into an unrecoveral dump over the edge, "SLOW DOWN" lifes to short

I pull the ABS fuse for the winter on the Suburban. The MonteCarlo is ok with ABS all year.

There is a TSB about overly sensitive ABS on GM trucks, activating at low speed when not required. Rust builds up under the sensor and drives it away from the tone ring.

I would not use ABS plowing regardless.

Yes, it was activating the second you touched the brake.... even while you were in park  on dry flat ground..... I warned him to pull the fuse ;)

At least that dangerous vehicle isn't on the road any more.

Re: ABS+snow over ice with a chevy plow truck

The older Chev,s were terrible with ABS on a icy road. Way to sensitive and would not let the truck to stop even at slow speeds. This is a well known fact in the interior.

The other problem with the older Chev was the frame would crack just behind the front wheels. It was even worse if you used the truck for plowing.

This guy probably did not have his truck balanced with the blade on the front with no weight in the back.

Ha..... the frame was welded just last month! Yes, he had small load of sand in the back which is the same amount most of us carry....... about 700-1000 lbs. Normally the truck with the studded snows would go straight up that hill w/o 4wd with studs & snows with that weight.
