Don't know if this has been asked before, but what is a song that sums up you existance/attitude/approach to things/personal favourite etc.
Father use to have a favourite called "Lillie-Ma-Lane". (sp!)
Spent his life whistling it when in the shed or driving or the likes. Sang it in the bath most of his life.
Told me is was a German song sung by German Soldiers in the Trenches in WW1. In WW2 he said all his Bn would sing it at night when in their trenches, with English words, and the Germans would reply in German words. Apparantly a popular English singer recoreded it too.
Must admit, i too like it.

For me, Long John Baldry sums up everything for me, with the song It still ain't East, and "after 20 yrs, it still ain't easy, but I have toughened up along the way, and I like it that way"

(although as a side point,I wonder what Estapan is like, and are the Red Neck Loonies and their Little Bar-room Floosies, really rowdy night and day.)

Oh, another sort of dance that stills my blood, it the Haka

Cheers
Phillip

What does it for you blokes.
Cheers
Phillip

Re: A theme song that sums up your existance

That is a very good question and subject of a topic Phillip!

Crikey though, now I start to think about it we could be here all day :D

"Raingods with Zippos" by Fish is pretty close to the mark for me and morbidly it's the track I want played at my funeral too (perhaps there's another topic subject right there?). For those that don't know who Fish is, he's a wide, tall, dour Scotsman with a gruff voice (or is that me I'm describing?) who used to front the band "marillion" before heading off solo. If you get the chance check out that song; it's from an album of his with the same title.

"Ring of Fire" by Mr Cash is pretty close to the mark too at times: too close!

Songs that make me swell up with pride: has to be "Flower of Scotland", "Scotland The Brave" or by far and away my favourite "Highland Cathedral" (another one for the final march).

Dancing??? I can only pogo :D :D

Actually my dancing style has been likened to "Baloo the bear in the Jungle Book"

Music can be a very powerful emotional trigger.

I broke up with my very first love while 'crying' was playing on the radio.

To this day, every time I hear it I feel the tear ducts filling.

"Mississippi You're On My Mind" Jesse Winchester

I think I see a wagon rutted road
With the weeds growing tall between the tracks
And along one side runs a rusty barbed wire fence
And beyond that sits an old tar paper shack

Mississippi you're on my mind
Mississippi you're on my mind
Oh, Mississippi you're on my mind

I think I hear a noisy old John Deere
In a field specked with dirty cotton lint
And below the field runs a shady little creek
And there you'll find the cool green leaves of mint

Mississippi you're on my mind
Mississippi you're on my mind
Oh, Mississippi you're on my mind

I think I smell the honeysuckle vine
The heavy sweetness like to make me sick
And the dogs, my God, they're hungry all the time
And the snakes are sleeping where the weeds are thick

Mississippi you're on my mind
Mississippi you're on my mind
Oh, Mississippi you're on my mind

I think I feel an angry oven heat
The Southern Sun just blazes in the sky
In the dusty weeds a fat grasshopper jumps
I want to make it to that creek before I fry

Mississippi you're on my mind
Mississippi you're on my mind
Oh, Mississippi you're on my mind

It might sound silly but Steppenwolf's 'Born To Be Wild' is close up until a few years ago. Parenthood has changed that somewhat. Now I'm more of a... Disney compilation or something! :)

Blue Sky, Allman Bros. has probably been my alltime favorite and rings true for me as well.

"Walk along the river, sweet love path.
It just keeps on flowin',
it don't worry 'bout where it's goin'".

Like Mags said, marriage and parenting has changed me some, but I have never been a goal setter. Just kinda wake up every day and go for it. Also, it was already a favorite the first time I went to the Colorado River as a kid. Fit nicely ;)

Well, I gotta get drunk and I sure do dread it,

'cause I know just what I'm gonna do.

I start to spend my money, callin' everybody honey,
and wind up singin' the blues.

I've spent my whole paycheck on some old wreck,

and brother, I can name you a few.

Well, I gotta get drunk and I sure do dread it,

'cause I know just what I'm gonna do.

I gotta get drunk, I can't stay sober,

there's a lot of good people in town,

who'd like to hear me holler, see me spend my dollars,

and I wouldn't think of lettin' 'em down.

There's a lot of doctors that tell me,

that I'd better start to slowin' it down.

But there's more old drunks than there are old doctors,

so I guess we'd better have another round.

Music can be a very powerful emotional trigger.
And intensely personal.. :( So much so that the two songs I relate too will remain completely, anonymous...

A ***** named Allice from Dallas I think by David Allen Coe. My favorite line from the song.
He lost the thread and his mind got clluttered and the words just rolled off down in the gutter.

It semes to happen more often now, Especially after BSing with technosinger. ;) :D

I'm gonna hire a wino to decorate our home
So you'll feel more at ease here
And you won't have to roam.
We'll take out the dining room table and put a bar along the wall.
With a neon sign to point the way to the bathroom down the hall. :p
