I went and looked at `66 evinrude 9.5 for sale listed as best offer, as the owner said it was a 9 hp "something". The owner said its been sitting in his barn for a good 4 years and didn`t know what to even ask for it. Didn`t even know if it still ran or was properly winterized before going into storage. I was thinking a parts donor for my `68 9.5. if needed. The overall condition was fair as the engine cover didn`t catch in the front, the front control plate was held on by someone drilling a hole and using a bolt through it and just somewhat neglected look to it. It did seem to have good comp( no gauge ) but didn`t check for spark or any thing farther as i thought, is it worth getting going. So he said shoot me an offer and i said $50.00. He said "NO". Was my offer realistically too low? But then he kept saying he didn`t know what its worth, Whats your opinion?

From the description I would think $50 was a very fair offer. For all you know it may well just be a parts motor.

Well thats what i was thinking, if it at least ran i would have offered more. I wasn`t trying to get something for nothing. I just figured right from the get-go I`d have to get -impeller, carb kit, possible ignition components and maybe lower unit seals, theres a $100 if i wanted to get it up to running condition. Plus theres no telling on boot leakeage or gearcase condition without it running.

I paid $200 for mine running, not running I wouldn't offer more than $100.

He wouldn't state a price, asked you to make an offer, and you made it. Your offer wasn't bad at all for a non-running, tinkered with 9.5. If he wanted more, he should have said what he wanted. You couldn't get more than $250 if you got it running, and would probably cost you $200 in parts to get it in reliable condition even if the clutch dog were good and it had good compression. That makes $50 about right, to me.
You did nothing wrong.

Re: A question of value v.s repair

I totally agree here. Both of the last two motors I bought, I paid 40 and 50 bucks. I spent 100 bucks on parts for the 3hp and got it running really nice and the other, I haven't even spent a dime on it, other than a gallon of gas and got it to run. Since then I only spent 10 bucks for a twin line tank.

So here, where I'm at, 100 bucks will buy you a new pair of coils, impeller(only), a carb kit and 3 feet of spark plug lead. Oh and uh, two condensors. Luckily, all I put into the lower unit was fresh new oil.

Re: A question of value v.s repair

Ya people are funny about outboards, some people understand that their value is what it is and some people think they are worth their weight in gold. Finding an outboard for cheap is a waiting game. To give you an example, my son has become quite the outboard fan and wants one like "dad" has. So I set out to find him one for his upcoming birthday. I saw an ad for a Scott Atwater 5 hp bail o matic, missing the tank and the bail setup. They guy posted $200 OBO. I sent him an offer of $50 and his reply was "i'd rather scrap it." Now what the guy doesn't know is that it is worth "$50". None of the accessories included and they weren't that great to begin with, went through impellers like crazy. So I didn't bother emailing back.

To conclude, I have my 15 in pieces in my dad's garage. A buddy of his comes over and notices it in the box in the corner. He asks my dad who's outboard and my dad tells him "my son restore's outboards". He tells my dad ,
"i've got an old outboard in my garage, it was my sons but he doesn't want it". To make a long story short it's a Johnson CD-12 I got for $50 and in pretty good shape , missing a recoil but I have dealt with that.

Never pay too much for it unless it's a super collectible motor, I missed 2 9.5's last year for $50 for the pair.

Yeah, I'm cheap when It comes to outboards.
And people think they are made of gold.

That guy wanted an offer of $250, then would have talked to up to $275, after he included the rusty gas tank.

I wont pay more than $100 for one.

Some are junk, but 90% of them have good compression.

Re: A question of value v.s repair

Yea, I had one of those 5hp Scotts. Nice running little motors, but like you said, they eat up a lot of impellers. The reason why that is, is because the engineers came back from a 5 martini lunch and decided they would design it, with the water pump assembly above the water line. A big fat DUHHH!!!
It only takes a few seconds to roast out an impeller before the water finally reaches it. LOL but they were a pretty good running little motor.:D:D I had a nice looking old 16hp Scott I bought for 20 bucks one time. All I had into it, was the cost of two new spark plugs. Those babies used the big D9J plugs which were a 17mm thread. Niiiicccceee. I sold it to a guy for 100 bucks.:D

but yea, good prices are basically a waiting game and a lot to do with where you're located. You could try posting a want ad on Craigslist or hit up some garage sales early in the saturday morning. This spring, things should get busy with those.

Keep us posted on that old 5.5 BK. Cool little motors. I have a guy bringing one by for a waterpump next week. The guy also has some old motors that he wants to talk trade with me on.:D

That's what I do. mine says-

Wanted; Outboard price $80 location, anywhere

Wanted outboard, what do you have?

email pics to (email)

Willing to pay up to $80 (adjust price depending on your budget that week)

--------------

Works pretty well, that's how I got my 11.5hp (I was confused at the time)

Thanks for all the responses. I thought my offer was fair as well. If he would have counter-offered me at say $75 maybe $100 i probably would have bought it. I could probably part it out and get it back.

The bigger and newer the engine, the more cash its parts will bring.

And old small engine, not too much...
