Unless the OP was standing there, when the many item shopper, parked her cart, it may not have been her fault at all. The coupons are a different story.

I have had, on many occasions, been standing in a regular line (with many items) and have an idle clerk at the express lane say, "I'll check you out here". I then get labeled as an "expresshole" by other disgruntled shoppers, with less than 15 items or less.

Life sure does stink, if this the main thing we have to worry about. ;)

I don't get using checks at stores these days. Only reason I can possibly think of for someone to use a check is if they don't, at that moment, have the money. What other reason would there be as opposed to a debit card?

This was a recent incident I would guess.

The last few days of a month and the first week are the worst times to shop.

These are the days when "assistance" checks, social security checks and retirement checks are delivered. Combine those checks with regular payday checks ......... havoc is created at most markets and "mart" type stores.

I know it's not an answer but it does relieve some of the shopping angst if you avoid the stores at this time.
Very true. I just got back from WallyWorld.
I think it was qualifying day for the Rascal 500.
I felt out of place being vertical.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA funny you say that. I was in a Kohl's a few weeks ago and bought a top. When I went to check out the girl at the counter had to call her supervisor because she had never taken a check in payment before. :D

Using debit cards is the #1 way to have your identity stolen Jeremy.

That is funny, my wife once tried paying for something with a $2 bill that she had got from a bank transaction. The gal wouldn't accept it because there is no such thing as a $2 bill. The manager had to actually come over to assure the worker that indeed they do exist. This was last year. I gotta think it's easier to steal an identity with a check you leave behind than with a debit card. The only check I write out these days is to the county owned parking ramp I have my parking contract with at work. It was managed privately and cards were readily accepted but to save money the county now manages it directly. Every month I email the government office to request the ability to pay either via card or at the kiosk in the ramp and you'd think I was asking for the cure for cancer. They refuse to modernize since I swear if they did government jobs would be lost.

A local convenience store, owned by some foreigners, had a $2 bill taped to their register for a few months. i always wanted to ask them if they thought it was fake-but they finally took it down.

The absolute worst is when it's a welfare-mom in the express lane, and each item gets checked to see if it's an eligible item. I was in line on an express, had 4 items. the welfare-mom had 2 sets of 15+ items. Yep, she had one pile of stuff for the welfare check, and the other was the beer and similar items that aren't welfare approved. The cashier still took forever to verify that X brand of milk/cheese/bread was approved. I was in line forever. I was so p-o'd that I gave the manager an earful. They didn't even open another register, and there must've been a 15 person pile-up. I don't go there anymore.

im a cashier at a regional grocery store. and what i normally do is kick a person out of my line if they have a cartful of items. its the cashiers fault for taking those people. and i know EBT or food stamp cards get restocked at the beggining of the month and government programs such as WIC (womens.infants.children) get in around the same time.

Thanks, Ladyfish. Saved me going into my anti-debit card rant.

I generally use cash unless I'm using one of those self-checkout monstrosities. Then I use a credit (NOT DEBIT) card.

I have become upset 2 times at walmart. Once when this man and woman put half of their weekly grocery store items in one buggie and the other half in another and figured it was ok to use the express lane ...Then once my drivers licence had a crack in the plastic cover and the teller said ""you know its illegal to use this as ID" I got pissed and loudly said "Lady as many fake IDs as you see every day from people that dont even speak english. You want to question one which is easy to see is VALID" . "The last highway patrol officer who saw my license didnt seem to have a (censored) problem with it being legit but YOU do?" She called the manager over as others waited and I got even louder.but the manager decided I wasnt a crook and I made the purchase.

My local big grocery store can't seem to figure out that, come 5:30, the place is hopping with people looking to grab a couple of items for dinner and beat it home. 15 checkoutlines and they've got two open....

I'd vote with my feet but I'm too lazy to drive elsewhere...or plan ahead enough to have food for a week in the house....:D

I also had the uncomfortable experience of being dragged out of a long line by a "helpful" store supervisor so she could route me through the express lane...with my 22 items.

There was no one there when she took me down but of course half way through someone shows up and is obviously fuming at my apparent lack of manners. Just as I was putting my wallet away and gathering up the bags I heard her mutter, "Can't you read, you jerk..." :(

And whats with those people who go to an ATM machine and put their card in and get a balance printed off, and then stick their card back in for a second time to make the withdrawl or whatever it was they came out to do in the first place???

Down here in the south the part about "jerk" would have started a verbal "conversation" the lady most likely would have regretted..She would have wished she had kept her mouth shut to the customer and better voiced it at the teller. Thats the way we roll down here...lol

This happened to me Saturday. I said no so he went to the next checkout over and the lady there said "So I can go over there and have everyone coming up behind me be mad that I have WAY more than 15 items?"

It wasn't rhetorical either, she was actually waiting for an answer. You could see it register with the clerk, he had never thought of it this way before, it was funny to watch. He stopped after that...

I must admit in the small town area where I live.... the express lane is ALSO the lane that is open to handicapped/disabled shopper's which I never complain about.

As frustrating as it is ........ patience works. So what is another 5 minutes in a line.

When you walk out into the parking lot and you run into an old friend/neighbor/classmate etc.... we normally stop and shoot the breeze for a few minutes........ we think nothing of spending time to do that.
