A new law in our county

The local radio station today announced that it will be a $95 fine for leaving the car keys in the car. It doesn't matter if they are hidden or not. Also if you lock your keys in the car, that is an automatic fine. If your car is stolen and the keys are in it, you also get fined.

I guess this is to prevent juveniles from joy riding. This doesn't really bother me since I always remove my keys from my vehicles. Some of the locals seem to be complaining about it. I just can't understand why some people tempt those that like to steal stuff. Just another issue where big brother is brought in to enforce a common sense practice of removing your keys.

There is already a law on the books about having an unattended vehicle running. This is mostly due to the winter season when people start their cars and let them warm up for a theif to steal them. Even if the car is locked and running will get you a fine. Geeesh, will it ever end? I know,,,,NOPE!

Re: A new law in our county

I am not saying you SHOULD leave your keys in the car (although mine are in it as I type), but why should the government fine me and make me a criminal. I am not "tempting" a thief. I may be making it easier for a thief, but they have no right to be getting in my vehicle, or house, without permission. Just gives the thieves more credibility - "well, the keys shouldn't have been in there, it is against they law, you know. I can't help they were tempting me!"

HOGWASH! It isn't your vehicle, stay out of it!

I could pass by 1,000 vehicles running with the keys in them and I would not be tempted to steal any - because it is wrong to steal. Just what we need - more laws to keep LEO's from enforcing the ones that need to be enforced!

I'd yank out my key cylinder and install a toggle switch just to say f*** you. Keys? What keys? ;) I left my old Jeep with the windows rolled down and a broken GM column which started without a key for years and it was still there every morning leaking something on the driveway...

If my insurance wants to raise my rates because I do this, that's fine, but the government can kiss my arse if they are goign to fine me for where I choose to store my keys.

One law would stop many of these stupid laws being passed. That law would be that the owner of his property is allowed to defend it by any means neccessary. Oh, I'm sorry that is what insurance is for.........bullpucky! What about those that hardly have anything that can't afford the insurance to protect what they have. Some work very hard to save for things to only allow a theif to walk away with it. Bad thing is, you can't stop them!

Years ago criminals were strung up for stealing your transportation.

I see this as neither liberal or conservative...
Since when is Ohio liberal anyway?
I live in the city so it's a no-brainer for me to remove my keys.....
If you leave your keys in there, you are enabling a would be thief....
It's like the dog hearing you open the can of food.....
They are always out there looking for a target of opportunity.....
If you leave them in there you are asking for it!
I see this law as nothing more than a way for the government to perform a 'cashectomy' on your wallet....
& I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find out that the insurance industry had their paws in it somehow ;) .....JK

You know first they would have to trespass on your property, then open a car door of a car they don't own. Then steal it. So by simply owning a car we are enabling.

_____________________________________________________

Big Insurance is behind this????

It ain't the dad gummed liberals, JB

I'll bet you a dime to a dollar the ACLU would love to defend you if you challenged this law.

It may be stupid to leave the keys in the car (although I do it all the time), but up till now it has not been illegal to just be stupid.

Big insurance makes more sense to me, as they have powerful lobbyists, and more to gain than anyone else (other than potentially the police who have to investigate it)

Big Insurance has powerful lobbyists working in Mayfloats county? eh OK?

Heaven forbid we actually blame theives for being theives. We need to punish those rich folks who actually own cars. I wonder if Big Bicycle will be pushing for similiar laws?

Re: A new law in our county

I'm not saying that they have right to take anything.....
Try this....
If you leave the garbage out & the dog eats it well.....
Bad dog!
However if you had put the garbage away, the dog couldn't get it....
If you left it out & he got in it you would say, "Damn I forgot to put the garbage away"....
So you are a little liable for your inaction...
Unless he makes the extra effort to get in the cabinet.....
Very bad dog!
Same for the keys....
"Damn I left the keys in & it's gone, bad thief....."If I had just taken the keys out, it would have been alot harder to steal my truck...
You are a little bit liable for your inaction...
Thief gets in open car with keys in ignition & drives off.....
That's taking a vehicle without the owners permission...
Judicial system says, bad thief!
Thief breaks window & jacks the steering column & hotwires car.....
This is Grand theft auto.......
The judicial system really frowns on that one....
They say,"Jail Time!" ;) :D
I ain't saying it's right....
I'm saying that you need to be responsible for your property....
If your kid left his bike in the driveway & it got run over, whose fault would that be?
If his bike got ripped off, because he failed to lock it up while at school, whose fault would that be?
Like I said, the fine part is just another way to extract cash from your wallet.....JK

Re: A new law in our county

Anyone who has their bike stolen, is a victim. The person who stole it would be at fault. Period. Assigning varying degrees of culpability is nothing more than the gnashing of teeth consistant in todays culture. People who steal are theives.

How about stealing boats, you really don't have to break a window or even rip out the steering column. Does that make the owners fault if they got stolen? Perhaps it's the boat manfucturers for not putting steering locks on or making it too easy to remove the ignition switch. Would a sailboat that left its sails on board be inviting theft?

Stealing is a problem with people of no moral fiber. And a system not interested in why so many people feel entitled to steal things they know don't belong to them.

Amen Pointer,........

JK,..... You're Soo Liberal,.... You Can't even See it.....

The Dog in your little example above points out Quite Clearly,...................

A Dog is the Ultimate Liberal persona....

Every Single Dog in the Whole Wide World,........

Absolutely Positively Refuses to Accept RESPONSIBILITY for THEIR Actions..............

It's Always the Victims Fault that they became a Victim..........................Ya Right...........

Re: A new law in our county

What an incredible waste of taxpayer money!

Before I moved to town I always left keys in one vehicle with a 1/4 tank of gas, and unlocked. That way if someone came onto the place, got past the dog, they would take my truck and leave not bothering me my home or my family. Unlocked so they wouldn't break anything, and little gas so when they won't get far. Plus all my neighbors knew this and did the same so if they broke down or got stuck they could come get my vehicle for a ride home. That happened often.

Keys and locks only keep the honest people out! This may cut down on the teenagers joyriding and risking injury, but cars are not hard to punch the ignition and go.

I usally don't chime in on this sorta of thing. But this bullsh#t.This crap is happening everwere. Most of it has do with judges making law and not inforcing the laws they already have, and prosecuting to the fullest ability. There's trials now going on in certain states with child molesters getting off.How did we become its the victoms vault?Like i said if the judges would do there job and do whats in the books alredy we,would'nt have to worry to much.Just my 2 cents.
Also this everbodys problem!Dem or rep or independats.

Re: A new law in our county

I think there are some here missing my point...
If I am so liberal as some say...
I wouldn't think it was wrong at all...
Like I said.... I live in the city...
Putting your toys away includes taking your keys with you.....
In a utopian society there wouldn't be a need for keys....
Someday in the future a voice command will start your car....
We are not there yet....
I do vote that if you are an illegal immigrant & are convicted of theft, that you be executed immediately....
Does everyone feel better now? :) :) ....JK

Re: A new law in our county

I'm a bit inclined to agree with PW's philosophy on the reason behind the change in this ordinance.Given the increase in crime throughout the country, this new law (unfortunately)may be coming to a city near you soon.
