A kinda, sorta, maybe, hopefully different take on a prop question!

Hello all!

I have a 2011 Tahoe Q7i (SSi) with a 5.0L carbed (TKS) V-8. I am looking to change from my stock 14.25x21P aluminum prop to a stainless prop. My local Bass Pro had a lot of Tahoes on their showroom floor, all with stainless props. The boat that I wanted had to be brought in from another dealer in the state after I bought it, and it has a stock aluminum prop. I've read everything that I can on prop types/requirements/needs, you name it, but I'm still in the dark a bit. I called Tracker Marine to inquire about their SS prop recommendation, and they said that they only outfit their boats with aluminum props. Baffled, I then asked the rep why all of the Tahoes at my Bass Pro have stainless props. he wasn't sure, and suggested that it was a dealer-added item. Ok. He then referred me to Mercury Marine. I don't care about 52-whatever MPH top end, I'd rather have the power to plane quickly and cruise with 7 or 8 folks on the boat, and maybe pull someone on skis or my kids on a tube with a few folks on the boat. Basically 60/40 power preference over top speed. Here's my different take on the "What prop do I need" question that's asked so much on the forums...If you have a Q7 with a 5.0L V-8 Merc, and you have a stainless prop, what brand/diameter/pitch do YOU have on your boat, is it better for speed, or for power, and, most importantly, are you happy with it? I know that the "What do I need" question has a lot of variables, that's why I'm curious as to what YOU have, how you use your boat, and if you are happy with the prop and it's performance. I hope that this is a better approach to the normal prop question! :) Hopefully, this info will be useful to others as well.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this, and your response. I truly appreciate and and all advice!

I don`t have a Q7, but I do have the Q6 which is the earlier version of the 07. I had an aluminum 21p 3 blade which worked fine at mid and top end speeds, but lacked some hole shot with several adults in the boat and pulling a wakeboarder or skier. No problem with a tube. I changed to a 19p 3 blade for better hole shot. I was very happy with that prop and lost maybe 2 mph at top end . No big deal. After bending that prop on a submerged tree, I recently replaced it with a 4 bladed solas. I just got back from a 5 day trip on Norris lake with all activities accomplished. Skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, cruising, and several trips across the huge lake at anywhere from 33mph to 45 mph with 6 adults and 3 kids in the boat. Needless to say, I was very pleased with top end and the holeshot was very strong, even with 3 adults and 2 kids in the boat, and one 180lb teen being pulled up on the wakeboard. Fuel efficiency was very impressive as well. The only thing that could have been better would probably be a 4 blade 19 or 20 p stainless. I just didn`t want to spend the cash. By the way, my boat also has the 5.0 carb. Hope this helps. Ps. With 2 adults on the boat during new prop testing, the boat reached 47mph on the gps with the 4 bladed prop 4500rpm. The 21 p prop would achieve 49 gps with 2 adults.

maddog,

I've got a '08 Q6 (5.0 carb), with the 14.25x21p alum. I'm looking for a replacement too, and am a bit confused by your post. You said you "replaced it with a 4 bladed solas", but didn't give a size or pitch. Can you help out with that info, and let me know what your WOT RPM is?

I currently run 4600 to 4800 at WOT depending on trim. I'm not sure on the speed, because my speedo doesn't work right now (soon to be replaced with GPS speedo).

Great info, thanks! The more that I read online, the more confused I get! I bought a 14.5/17P Vengeance SS on eBay, and it helps a lot with the holeshot, but top end suffers tremendously. I just installed Smart Tabs on my boat, so I want to use the 17p as my power prop,a nd maybe go to a 19p to get a little speed back. Not necessarily to run fast, but so that the motor has to work less at XXMPH, hopefully resulting in longer life and better fuel economy over the long haul. I ahve been considering the Enertia 14/19p and the Vengeance 19p. The Enertia is nice, but I doubt in my case that it would make enough difference to justify the cost. I'm not terribly worried about the cost, but I just don't want to spend an extra hundred bucks for a mile per hour, know what I mean? I want the best value for my money, adn that makes it a really tough decision. My current prop is older and doesn't have the Flo-Torq hub, which I really would like to have on my main prop. Cheap insurance. I ahve been out 5 times on two different boats in the last month and a half, and that boat hs hit a slightly submerged (enough to be hidden until you're right up on it) log twice. Took a chunk out of the cav plate on my boat the first time that it was out (OUCH!), but it hasn't affected handling, so I'll get it fixed at the 20 hour service mark. I'm in Alabama, and a lot of the lakes and rivers have more debris in them than normal due to the tornadoes back in April.

I'm not to this point yet but I have a lot to learn about props/pitch/blades and such. Never really paid attention to it on my tracker. Gives me something to research while I wait to pull the trigger...........

I take it the isues are the same weather it's a Q7 or a WT 216 deck boat?

I would imagine that it is. There are just so many variables involved before you even get into passenger/gear/fuel weight. I kind of want to say "I have XX boat, with this many folks and this much gear (on average), I want this kind of holeshot, cruising, and top speed performance, I ahve this engine...now tell me exactly what prop I need"! Maybe a remote controlled, power-adjustable blades prop with an LCD graphical display so that I can dial in exactly what I need from hour to hour, all for under $300? Think that's asking a bit too much?! :)

Got it, kind of. I really don't care that much about speed. Not pulling skiers, just the occasional tuber. The auto thing appeals to me, like the tech.

Re: A kinda, sorta, maybe, hopefully different take on a prop question!

Ok. My boat had a 14.25" x 21p aluminum prop standard. Good speed, relatively low RPM cruising, but slow out of the hole. Bought a SS Vengeance 14"x17p prop. I think 14, may have been 14.5. Can't remember at the moment. Anyway, the boat jumped up on plane, but had a lower top speed, and the motor ran several hundred RPMs higher at the same cruising speed (mor wear on engine over time, less fuel economy). Good prop for a boat load of folks, or when pulling. Bought a SS Vengeance 14" x 19p over the weekend. Figured that would still give me decent time to plane, but give a bit more speed if needed, and bring the cruising RPMs down a little bit. I am planning on using this as my everyday prop, and put the 17p on if I'm towing folks with a boat full of peeps. I also installed Nauticus Smart Tabs last week so I'm thinking that the 19p prop, in conjunction witht he Smart Tabs, should be right on the money. Unfortunately, the prop is shipping parcel post, so it probably won't be here until February! :)

I carry two props for my 2008 Q7i. For lighter loads, I have a 19" Mer. Enertia and for heavier loads, I slap on the 18" to stay within the recommended RPMs. I have tested all sorts of props including a 4 blade and found this prop performed the best.

Great info, thanks! That sounds like the way I will be going too.
