hello to everyone I found a 1968 starcraft Holiday last summer on craigslist so I went to see and the guy told me the outdrive needed work but the motor was fine so he dry fired it up (there wasn't any water around the area) it ran smooth for a 68' 110HP so i bought it for $600. So it was not long that i found out pre-alpha outdrive parts are expensive. then I found a parts boat a 84' glass with 120 mercruiser and alpha outdrive so i started the switch it was not easy by myself and not having no clue what i was doing besides what i read here when pulling there motor out i found a hair line crack across the lower section of the block so i got the a great ideal to weld it up with some cast iron rods (never do this trust me ) i have been welding for a few years and i heard people tell me as long as you pre and post heat and then cover it in sand to let it cool slow it would work. Well they must not have worked with cast iron this thin when i pulled the sand off i had cracks everywhere so had to try one last thing (just a reminder the parts boat motor needs rebuilt they left the motor cover off and no air cleaner i had to sand blast the rust out of the manifold just to use it) good old jb weld i took the thermostat out so it would have no pressure. So I got the new outdrive in had to do a little cutting on the hole in the transom but got it in and then got the motor and everything else together. I have had the boat out 3 or 4 time with no leaks from the block. it seems that it sits so high in the bow that the complete outdrive is under water and even at WOT there is so much still in the water that its spraying water everywhere so should i move the 12 gallon fuel tank and the two battery's up front? next what should the WOT rpm be? what pitch prop should i be using I'm up to a 21 that i have not tried yet? its crazy that every other 68' starcraft Holiday that i see on here has a ladder to climb up on the bow and mine does not it looks factory but i added the walk though windshield. I will try to get some pics up but I have slow internet. I just want to say thanks to everyone I found so much good info. on this site it was very helpful.

Re: A few questions about my 68' starcraft

Peter,
I called the folks at Mercruiser and gave them my boat length and the size of my motor and type of outdrive and they gave me prop size and pitch. They also told me their recommendation for what rpms to be running at wot.

As far as why you don't have steps for your walk thru-who knows. Folks change things around so much anything could have happened to it.

I would post your questions about your outdrive hanging low:) problems over at the mercruiser forums. Some of those folks can be real helpful.

Welcome to iBoats!

BTW, where are you located and do you still have the casings for that 110 outdrive? I'm looking for upper and lower outdrive casings that are intact.

There is no way she should be THAT bottom heavy..
I strongly suspect a whole lotta water and foam is under that deck..
I have the same 12 gal tank & battery there in the stern and she floats pretty straight...

I kinda like those boats..Welcome Aboard!

either that baby has a full diaper or the stern was redone and the new cutout for the OD is 6 inches lower than factory..Which by looking at the pics seems unlikely...

And Petes...

Dont ever ever run her without water..either in it or on the muffs..
I would have had the seller knock off 100 bucks INSTANTLY when he shut her down for the new impeller and or water pump..lol:D

yes your right about running it dry but before the guy started it he showed me the upper gears in the outdrive and man they were gone so the outdrive was not turning but didn't end up using that outdrive anyways but you are absolutely right I guess that shows my lack of experience when buying a boat

Re: A few questions about my 68' starcraft

you may very well be right with the wet foam but it goes 3/4 the way up the boat doesn't it the boat feels light as feather on the road and in the water me and my bother stood up against the windshield thats about 500 lbs and it didn't seem like the bow moved but i probably need to get a pic from land to see how bad it is in this pic I dont know if you can tell how high the bow is but thats 250 lbs on it. the second pic shows the water line does that look right and in the third pic the rear water line maybe its fine wish I had a better pic for you guys THANKS FOR THE HELP

Re: A few questions about my 68' starcraft

Hmmm, what condition is the plywood floor? I have a '22 holiday and could barely lift the trailer tongue when I first bought the boat. The foam in was completely dry, but the plywood was extremely soggy. I replace the plywood, and screwed some Marine board on top, which is pretty heavy. Now I can lift the tongue easily with one hand. It's amazing how much extra weight the wet plywood added.

Here is my waterline.

man your boat sits nice in the water i would say i have something wrong my stern must be real heavy when i first got the boat I could lift the tongue with one finger that should have told me something I even moved my adjustable trailer back one bolt hole (you can see in the pic) because if not when you got to far back the tongue would fly up. well this spring I'm going to tear in to it at least replace the floor is the foam a must is it just a sound damper or keep me from sinking? THANKS FOR THE HELP GUYS

The foam is basically the difference between having something to hold on to until help arrives or not. I put about 75 pool noodles in mine.

I think it boils down to so funny colored pipe insulation you use in the pool they sell at twice the price but it might be a different material

Petez22 ----- You do not mention triming the boat out with your outdrive?? are you able to or is it not effective. I to have a Holiday 22 ft and have a no trouble keeping the bow down . Can't hardly lift it off the jackstand, its fairly heavy. I also have Bennett trim tabs on mine and think they take a lot of work off of the motor I feel they are big saftey factor on the bigger boats.

Re: A few questions about my 68' starcraft

hey puget I think when the outdrive is trimmed all the way down its pushing down hardest on the bow and up on the stern but even when its on the trailer if i loosen the winch the bow feels light so light that i think two men could lift it a little but if i got alot of wet foam/plywood there might be alot of weight in the rear I should have replaced the floor when i had the motor out but after buying the boat and the parts boat i was a little short on cash so this is the kind of stuff that happens when you half ***** a job. That pool noodle job you did EZMOBEE looks pretty good you might have sold me on that one. THANKS GUYS
