A boat restoration riddle

I have two dogs. They enjoy being around me whatever I am doing. They walk with me as I do yard work. They lay at my feet when I am at the table. My poor dogs have been itching a bunch recently and I have been clueless as to why. My wife comes into the garage last night and mentions how the dogs lay under the boat while I work on it, since they can't be in it with me and how cute it is. After she told me this, I no longer let the dogs lay near my boat. Why?

My dog likes to be under my feet in the shop too.

I put up a screen to keep him out because if I drop anything, he eats it. When I take him for walks I get to see some of the stuff he's eaten...like plastic spirals from the drill press or even a 1/4 20 X 1" stainless bolt.

He 'respects' the screen, staying as close as he can to the action.

My uncle has this same problem with his Springer in his machine shop. Kept getting shavings in her feet. It was a bummer but he finally had to stop taking her out there.
