99 Evinrude Fitch 175 over heating

I recently purchased a 99 2300 ebbtide deck boat with a 99 Evinrude 175. Motor runs great but when I have 8 or more people on the boat I can only run about 2miles at 4800rps or higher and the temp light comes on. I pull it off plane back to idle and 20secs later it goes of and I can jump and run again for a couple miles and the light comes on again. I don't know when the last time the water pump was changed if ever. I'm hoping thats the problem. Any input on this would really help. Thanks.

Go for the throat. Change the water pump first and then check the thermostats.

Also drop the prop pitch 1 size if your carrying that much load...

Thanks for the info. Is there a certain way to check the thermostats? Just look for corrosion? I've worked on alot of motors from weedwackers to trucks but this will be my first outboard. again thanks for the info.

Cracker, it's real easy to pull the t-stats and check them on your stove in a pan of water. While they are out you should back flush the motor through the t-stat openings with light pressure from a garden hose. After reassembling, I would suggest a flush with either vinegar or another product such as Salt-Away.
BRP maintains a web-site with diagrams which should help with removal.

Good advice from Outofcontrol, try that first, However I am afraid that you will still end up changing out the water pump or at the very least the impeller. Not a difficult job to do. I dont know if you dock your boat or launch and land but you have to take the boat out of the water to do it.
Have you by chance noticed the tell tale "pee stream"? if not your impeller is shot....
