99 25 hp johnson

I have a 99 25hp johnson. Im installing a shaft extension kit and replaceing the water pump. I can't figure out how to disconnect the shift rod. any help would be great.

Welcome to iboats dlee!

First remove the water intake screens from the lower unit. Behind it you'll find the shift rod connector. With two wrenches, unscrew the upper part of the connector out of the lower part.

Raise the upper part up to expose a small plastic keeper on the end of the upper shift rod. Carefull take the keeper off....it's split for this but be careful, they break easy if pride to far apart.

Work the shift lever to raise the upper shift rod up so you can remove the upper part of the shift rod connector. Once off, the lower unit will drop off.

Check the link below to BRP's site. Click on product in the upper left hand corner and follow the directions. You can see the parts breakdown for your lower unit.

Thanks for the iformation. I have a manual ordered will be a few days before I receieve it..Do I have to remove the power head to get the keeper of the upper shift rod?

No. Every thing is done at the lower unit. You will see this once the manual comes....which is an excellent idea. Also, if you would take a look at the BRP site at the parts breakdown, it would make it clear too.
