'99 225 OP...Motor stalls when shifting

I am having stalling problems with my motor when I shift. It also stalls sometimes at idle. I am idling at 800rpms and other than this issue the motor runs great. Is this a timing related issue or could it possibly be because I'm using 87 octane fuel?

What motor have you got? 800 in gear or in neutral?

It's a 1999 225hp Evinrude Ocean Pro running on 50:1 premix. 800rpm is idling in neutral. When I kick it into gear it stalls unless I goose it a bit. It will run in gear at idle when I throttle down but then when I go to reverse it will stall. This is most problematic when navigating in my marina.
