I think I am having issues with my vacuum hubs. Considering I just use the truck to tow can I just move the hubs from auto to engaged and leave them like that? From what I understand it will make the parts spin but it is still disconnected in the transfer case until I flip the switch to 4x4

What issues do you think you are having? Symptoms? it is never really a good idea running them engaged all of the time, not only does the parts turn, they wear and they also affect fuel mileage. Let us know what you are experiencing and we might be able to come up with a solution. By the way, is this a diesel?

Its a gas v10 so there is no pump. I just have to replace the vacuum lines. Chase down where the leak is and correct it.

Very good, you knew why I asked if it was a diesel! LOL

Most issues with vacuum operated hubs are a leak in a vacuum line, I have had them a couple of times in the past, I actually replaced my lines with fuel lines that are fiber re-enforced and have not cut or poked a line since and have had no more problems.

So I played with my hubs last night. The drivers side is really hard to turn and does not turn as much as the passengers side. Im not sure if they work. I put the truck in 4x4 cut the wheel and drove in a circle. On every 4x4 I have owned I can feel the wheels fighting the pavement and the 4x4 moaning. Nothing last night.

Ayuh,.... That would lead me to believe the sticky hub ain't workin',....

Takin' 'em a part, cleanin', 'n regreasin' has saved mine in the past,...

My '96 F-250 still has it's original automatic hubs,...

I agree with Bondo, sounds like it is time to service the hubs, if it is the factory grease in there, they are gummed up, I have heard of that happening on many Fords with the original grease, word on the street these days is clean and re-lube the hubs before you drive them much.

Ayuh,.... 'n I've found it to be the Perfect place to use Quicksilver 2-4-C grease,...

Not the bearin's, but just the hubs,...

Well I think I have my Saturday project lined up for me. Perhaps Friday after work if I get out early enough.

Ayuh,.... If yer gonna go past the Hubs, 'n repack the front wheel bearin's, while yer in that Deep, I'm guessin' yer gonna need a "Special" socket,...

Donno what yer's looks like, but I've got a pile of "Special" sockets for Ford front, as well as rear wheel bearin' retainer nuts,...
It seems that Ford has to change it, just abit, every 3 to 5 years,...
Every time I get a newer truck, I've had to buy yet another "Special" socket,...
Most of 'em are KD sockets, from my local Napa,...

Oh,... 'n don't forget to pick up a new wheel seal,.... ;)
For Grease,... see below, but don't use 2-4-C for the bearin's,...

This is the great thing about having a mechanic live next door. Help or a tool I don't have is just a knock away. Im pretty sure he feels the same way with having a Carpenter next door. It works out well. I help him with his house and he helps with my cars.

Well I took out the hubs this week and repacked them. Was not that big of a deal. Took about an hour per side.

Well I can move the hubs by hand now. I have driven chevy for years and they let you know when you are in 4x4 where the ford seams to have a much different design where you can't feel the wheels slipping.

Is there anyway to verify that the 4x4 is working besides getting her stuck in some mud?

Sure, put it in 4wd with the front end on jackstands and see if you can turn one wheel while someone holds the other. If it is in 4wd it isn't going to turn.
