I have a 1998 Johnson 115 v4 that has an intermittent bogging issue.
The engine starts great from hot and cold. Idles great. Has no issues below 2000 rpms that i can tell. No issues during acceleration to get the boat on plane.
While cruising on plane, anywhere between 3000-5000 rpm it will be running PERFECTLY and all the sudden it will intermittently lose power/cut out/bog/drop rpms for a few seconds, sometimes longer and then immediately jump back to full power and perfect running. When this is happening the motor jolts as if a cylinder isnt firing.
It sounds like the motor is choking from lack of fuel (air in lines) or I have found quite a bit of water (1/2" in bottom of solo cup out of about 16 oz. of fuel from the separator) in the fuel/water separator.
Last week I had the boat out 5/7 days.
Day 1: bogged 3-4 times for a few seconds each, total of 20 miles running.
Day 2-4: No bogging what-so-ever, about 40 miles
Day 5: No bogging for 20 miles, then bogged half the way back to the ramp (3 miles) stopped for 2 miles... I was pumping the fuel bulb which seemed to help at first but then... started to bog while i was pumping the bulb the rest of the way back (2 miles)
I pulled the plugs and none looked fouled or dirty.
Was out yesterday and dumped the fuel water separator while on the water after it bogged on the way out (5 miles) and there was no change.
I added 2 bottles of line drier (HEET or something) from advance auto parts to try and soak up the water in the fuel but there has been no change.
The problem was not so intermittent yesterday and was happening the whole day. Seemed to be getting worse.
What am I up against here? Carb jets clogged up that dont inject enough fuel at high rpm's??? or could it be water getting in the engine???
Remember it starts and idles like a dream...
Any help is much appreciated.
