Question of my day. I have a 1976 OMC 5.7L in my boat a 22ft Slickcraft. I'd like to changeover to Mercruiser. What outdrives and driveshafts would bolt up to it if any? And I know some transom modification would be required including beefing up transom and filling the OMC hole and cutting a Mercruiser hole required. But would I have to move the Engine up or down or forwards or backwards. Or would present motor mount position work? Thanks..

In 76, I think OMC was using the Ford 5.8. Switching from the OMC Stringer will require extensive Transom Work(at least 10 layers of properly layed Fiberglass) as the Transom will be bearing the strain of the Thrust. New Holes for the Mounts will likely be required.
You should get ahold of the Mercruiser Installation Instructions, as the Cutout for the Drive, has to be cut and angled in a Specific Fashion. A jig is also useful to insure the Bolt Holes are perpendicular to the Transom,

going to any drive from your OMC will require a new transom and stringers. at that point, you can go to Mercruiser, Volvo Penta, Ilmore, etc.

current motor location / mounting / etc. is specific to your OMC drive, its intermediate housing, etc.

Well I like this old tug so I guess get all the life out of the OMC, and then if parts become a problem I'm looking at a pod and O.B.
