Well i figured i would start a thread on my transom rebuild!
It all started when i decided to redo the interier and the deck.
as soon as i pulled out the piece of plywood with carpet on in at the transom i knew i was in trouble!
But since we want a boat this summer i had to do something
after some research on here i started to tackle it!
so here we go!

Finially got all the old wood off the glass

While using PL to laminate your wood pieces together, I CAN'T recommend that you use it to adhere your tansom to the outer skin of your boat. I would strongly suggest that you use thickened resin and mat to accomplish that. Either epoxy or poly but PL is NOT a good idea.

Re: 97' Larson transom rebuild

Is this pic with the wood still in?

If not.
I see some holes at the top of the glass on either side of the transom,2 on the left and 2 on the right and it looks like more holes in the glass on the left side in the center. What was that from?
I would seal those up with some 5200. You can pick it up at lowes or home depot.
From the pics it looks like it was from were they screwed the wireing to the transom but I don't see why they would screw it all the way into the glass.

After looking at it again, are those for thru hull bolts for ski brackets?

Re: 97' Larson transom rebuild

I got the transom glued and clamped into place
the hole for the outdrive is a 1/2' smaller than needs to be and i will cut it out when clamps are removed

Sorry to see you had to replace the transom, but glad to see you are getting it fixed up and ready to go. And, it gives me a reference if I need to do my boat in the future. Good luck with it!

Re: 97' Larson transom rebuild

I wish you luck. I would not want my family out in the middle of the lake in a boat that I was not SURE of it's seaworthiness. The method you used is not the tried and true and tested method and if it breaks free under load it could cause a catastropic failure. In 80 ft of water this would not be good. Like I said before SAFETY should be the #1 concern when re-constructing boats or anything that involves human life. RANT OVER!

Re: 97' Larson transom rebuild

1.How would it break free? Its bolted with the outdrive and will be tabbed into the stringers and fiberglassed in. oh and 4 bolts for the ski hooks
2. Even if i didnt do anything but fiberglass it in it is way better than the mush that was in it last year
3. The titanic was unsinkable and look what happened to it
4. What if we hit a log what if we run aground what if an aligator jumps into the boat what if i have a heart attack what ifs will keep everybody home every day of the year!
5.Safety is my number one concern for my family myself and at work.
6.how sea worthy is any boat really?
7.Every thing in life can be a hazard we just have to reconize the danger and what measures we can put in place to minimize them (like the lil pads for the keyboard so you don't get capel tunnel) :-0
8.If it was really that bad of a processwhy did't anybody say DON"T do it because of X reasons other than i wouln't suggest it
9.your like the fella that comes over after you buy something new and ask why did you buy that one this one would have been a lot better
10.If you like you can come over take it out a put it in the way you see fit..I will even feed you supper but not organic and no soy

Re: 97' Larson transom rebuild

Your boat, your project, your choices. I gave you the recommend method for installing the transom. You never asked the why or why not. Your next post said you had installed it. Using PL can and will probably leave VOIDS, i.e. air pockets between the transom and the outer skin which can and probably will cause condensation to occur and weak spots between the outer skin and the wood core. If you applied the PL in a TOTAL coverage method, meaning you did not use a notched trowel and you did not just squirt it out of the tube in a random pattern and then clamp it on and mush it out then it MIGHT be ok. It DOES adhere very well and you ARE correct about the bolts and the I/O does make it MUCH more acceptable. I would advise you to do some investigation as to the stresses that are placed on a transom by the outdrive of an I/O and the beating of wakes and waves on a hull. ANY flex at all in the structure WILL be amplified greatly by these forces. You want it to be a solid one piece structure at all costs.

Re: 97' Larson transom rebuild

cgd7, I hope it works because I used pl myself to bond the transom to to outer glass.

I try not to take some of the smartas... replys to hart cause I know most of the guys on here have been their and done that many times over.
Do it how you want and hopefully it works.

9.your like the fella that comes over after you buy something new and ask why did you buy that one this one would have been a lot better
I can't stand those people. LOL

BTW... Just remember most of the guys on this forum are old and you know how grumpy they can be.

I like all the feed back
my wife makes fun of me because my best friend is my 70 yr old neighbor..I help him and he teaches me all kinds of stuff (mainly how nice people can really be they treat us better than our family)

I took off the clamps off tonight and when i get off duty from worknext week i am going to get the glass and resin

to fiberglass it in what kind of fiberglass is the proper stuff for the transom
