Hello all, i have a 97 johnson 200 that i recently rebuilt the carbs on. Things were running great, then encountered rough idle. Got it home, found cylinder #3 carb was stuck open. Found debris in float needle, coudlnt get it to reseal, so i rebuilt, was running great in driveway and on way out to island, when we arrived it had a hard time idling, but we arrived. Ball was still primed, no gas from carbs, so we enjoyed the beach. Went to go home and no start, had to get a tow. Got it home and started with the basics. Fuel is getting to where it needs to be and staying there. Plugs are new, all 6 sparking and appear normal. Found a thread that stated to check the holes behind the cal pocket gasket on the side of the throttle body, decided to check #3 as it had issues before, all holes open, clean and clear. I did thouroughly clean throttle bodies when i rebuilt carbs. NOW, HERES WHAT I FOUND AND my question. The cal pocket gasket was cracked and falling apart. So i decided to keep checking them. All 6 are less than a month old and cracked thruout. What can cause this? I run non ethanol, as much as i hate to right now. I found a torque spec for the 4 screws but cannot remember what it was, but i torqued it to spec. Any thoughts or ideas?

Manual say 10 / 15 INCH LBS.-----Most folks over tighten those.-----A wee baby could do it with bare fingers almost.

Black gaskets…probably OEM 1997 or older.
Gaskets in the OEM kit now (past 10 years) come with brown, viton gaskets.

Do you recall what the packaging looked like when you bought them?
Any chance they have been sitting on a shelf for the past 20 years drying out?
Just a thought.

Newer gaskets are a brown viton material.-----But there is a lot of substandard material out there these days !

Packaging looked new. But could have sat i guess. Pretty busy repair shop tho here in south florida. Hard to believe these kits would just sit. I will reach out to them in the morning.

Those gaskets are part of the rebuild kit. Doubt they sell many individual gaskets.

Worst than time is UV and ozone exposure although the ones on the picture look dry rotted.

Hard to believe they’ve not been in service for a good long time based on the deterioration of the surface and the erosion around the mounting holes.

No sir, 1 month old tops. Yes they came with the carb kit, not bought indivually. Would i benefit from ordering just these vs replacing the kits? I know the place will warranty them, just wasnt sure if i should order differently.

Even so, how many carbs kits for a 25 yro outboard do they sell in a season?

Depends on whether or not the other parts in the kit are compromised as well.
Worst case, you take a hit in the wallet in buying the kit.

I would order from a big, on-line dealer/parts houses or Evinrude direct to assure fresh product.

They could have stocked their shelves with new old stock as well. I have seen adds for dealers In my area going out of business or already did some time ago selling off old stock. That could be a question to ask your supplier as well.
