If you can get another tank (borrow one from a buddy), give it a try. It sounds like the tank you have might not be venting right, or, you may have a bad fuel line connection (o-ring). Trying a different tank will quickly tell you if it's that or not.

Re: 97 evinrude problem

how far away from the motor is the tank??

I have a long run and my motor starves for gas about 4-5 times before it finally fills the line and i can run with out issue. I have to be ready to squeeze the bulb when the motor sputters , and it picks right back up...do it 4-5 times and then I am good.

you might have a similar issue.. i am not sure if my fuel pump is getting weak and wont PULL the fuel . seems once I have a solid column of gas its good. I have a T connection because of two forward tanks I pull fuel from and a long run of gas line. plus a water seperator and an inline fuel filter.

do you have a similar situation?? ei long gas run?

If you have a permanent tank mounted in the boat, you may have a sticking tank outlet (anti- siphon) check valve.

The check valve is located on the outlet of the tank.

Good advice (above) to run it on a seperate tank to check.

Get the NGK's out of that engine. Champ's only for OMC's (John/Rude).

I don't like it either but those engines were very particular about plug brand.

what size is best for my engine champion what

I don't have a plug chart handy but a dealer can answer that. Or, someone here.

At any rate, that may be a PART of your problem.

Re: 97 evinrude problem

lets see can this be coming from a water flow problem killing my motor i notice it take longer than normal for the motor to pump out of the p hole other than a heat sensor does it have another sensor that might do this also my water flow gauge reads backwards but goes up and down

It may be your power pack is going out. I have the same motor, same year that had the same problem two years ago. Like you, I kept thinking fuel and ran myself in circles. After countless trips idling back to the launch, I finally waved the white flag and brought it down the street to my local Evenrude dealer. It was either admit defeat or 1/4 throttle my future fishing trips. He called me with a quote on a new power pack and I debated his conclusion. After convincing me that if he was wrong he would eat it, I agreed to let him change it. The boat jumps on a plane and stays there without missing a beat. I asked him if this was common problem with these units as my motor does not have many hours on it. He assured me that he hasn't changed many, but I wonder.

Have you checked the high speed jets for restrictions?
