'96 Mariner 15hp Clutchdog orientation

I'm repairing the lower unit on a '96 15hp Mariner and I didn't notice that the pin that holds the cluthdog on the prop shaft is slightly off center. Now during reassembly, I don't know if it should be towards the front or the rear. Can anyone help?

Through trial and error, I determined that the hole for the pin in the clutch dog needs to be towards the front, thus biasing the clutch dog back, When I had it the other way around, it wouldn't go into reverse.
