96 Johnson Cold Start Problem

I am experiencing a cold start problem on my '96 112HP Johnson. With the motor in the down position, I prime the ball until firm, and then depress the choke for 7 to 10 seconds. The motor fires right up, but dies as soon as I give it any gas (either via the throtle or choke) to keep it idling. After about 15 attempts it finally lets me give it more gas and idles fine. The motor runs like a top, and doesn't have any starting problems once it's warm. This problem has occurred over the past few years (running 89 octane gas) so it doesn't appear to be a bad gas problem. Any ideas?

Hmmm. Beerstud, what kind of compression you got? <br />Poor copression can cause this. Also weak spark, but this usually will surface as fouled plugs.

Had the compression checked last year and it was OK, but can't remember the numbers. Plugs appear to be in good shape without any excessive fouling.
