hello, new to boating. bought a fishing boat w/ 1996 130hp johnson. motor was sitting for about 2 yrs. spent $2000.00 with a rep. boat shop. shop replaced all carbs/1 power pack/all plugs/200hour full tuneup/and system check. shop stated motor has good compression and is good to go. motor runs great at high speed/rpm. engin runs a little rough and mid range here comes the problem..at idle it runs very rough, pops every few seconds then stalls. often wants to stall when going from idle to slow speed or reverse. took it back to shop, shop did some fine tuning but same problem when i took it out. shop stated its a 2 stroke its going to run rough..Iam gettinng the blow off. shop stated that they tested the gas that was in the tank(old gas) said it was ok.

sound like you need to kidnap the mech and have him adjust on the real water.

Hello aPauling,

A loop charged motor does not like to run cold, especially at idle. Check the condition of your thermostats.

They are directly behind the covers at the tops of the two cylinder heads. The covers have 4 screws each. The thermostat has a spring so don't let it get away from you.

The recirculation check valves allow flow in one direction, If they become defective, they can also cause poor idle.

There are other possible causes. These two are fairly common ones that are easily checked and repaired at very little cost.

Try checking the timing or bringing it back to them and have them check the timing. What is your WOT RPM, also how old is that old gas in the tank?

I doubt they "tested" the fuel. Never seen a typical outboard shop that has the equipment to do that. That motor should, and will, idle perfectly if it's healthy and hitting on all 4. If the fuel is more than 45-60 days old, dump it pronto. If you've been running it on that fuel, check compression again. Pistons don't like it.
