Hello, this is my first post here and I appreciate anyone's advice. I am looking at a 96 Capri 1850 SS for sale by my house. The owner said that it needs a gimble ring replacement and trim pump cylinoides I have never owned a boat in my life, but it looks really nice besides the repair. Anyhow, does anyone know how much that repair should cost? Should I be concerned about anything else? He said that a trusted shop by his house quoted $900 for the repair...what do you all think? Thanks a lot,
mole

If it is going to be your first boat, don't buy one that needs that sort of repair . . I think the parts alone are around $900.

If it is the gimbal ring, those don't break by themselves, so that may not be all there is to the story. (sorry)

Keep looking.

He said that is was his fault, and that the Trim pump cylinoide was broken, which caused the gimbal ring to go bad. according to him, the boat shop he uses will repair it for $900 and warranty it for a year. Other than that it is really nice.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... Sounds far fetched to me,...

How, 'n Where, exactly is the ring broken,..??

The most common cause is a realestate encounter....

New term for me....what is a "cylinoide"? Solenoid?

I just talked to him, he said that the trim pump went out while he was on the water. He had to lift the trim at the dock and the boat dropped down after disengauging the pistons. Says that the ring is not badly broken.

Broken is broke. IF he is selling it cheap it would probably be worth your time. You could buy it and have it running in the water in a couple weeks with new parts. IF that is all thats wrong with it. Replacing any of those parts is not hard at all. Just kinda expensive.

Ebay would be your friend, Im always running up on gimbal rings and whole trim pump assemblies.

From my understanding, the trim pump failed and he had to get out and hold the lower unit up while getting boat out of water. Then the sterndrive fell and it the concrete busting the gimbal ring, because it would be almost impossible for a man to hold something that heavy up in the water and walk up a mossy slippery ramp without falling. Case closed.
