Hi guys,
Have a 95 Ocean Pro 150 idling 1200 - 1300 rpm out of water/ in water 1000rpm and 850 in gear. Rebuilt carbs ( they were spotless) shot timing, not sure what it should be. Below pointer says 20 degrees BTDC. Have done all of sync and link accept timing moved low speed tab for timing both ways - had no effect on idle - still 1300.

Thanks

Ed

Re: 95 Ocean Pro 150 1200 -1300 idle rpm

Motor is designed to run in water!
timing is set with a special tool not timing light...don't touch high timing adjustment.
Make sure throttle cable is returning arm to idle position.
Make sure timing spring is returning to idle position
with boat in water at idle in gear try to get idle around 650 rpm
if motor continues to idle fast verify sync\link
If still high you may have an air leak.

Motor idles in water at 1000rpm 850 in gear
what is the idle screw adjustment for this - currently at 41/2 turns out
Rebuilt Carbs the were perfect
where would be a good place to start looking for an air leak?

Thanks
Ed

Thanks, for screw settings, based on 3 turns out - would 41/2 create the 1300rpm that I am seeing? Or do I need to look elsewhere for the problem?

Thanks

Look elsewhere.

Are your throttle plates fully closed on all carburetors when the throttle is in the idle position?

Re: 95 Ocean Pro 150 1200 -1300 idle rpm

checked throttle plates, checked throttle cable, checked throttle linkage - perfect
any thing else about these 150's that could cause hi idle?

Thanks

When boat is running should primer bulb be hard (full of fuel) or squishy?

QuikStart not releasing the timing advance could do it.

No it should not be hard, but it should not collapse either.

We may be on to something. I never notice engine idle down off quickstart system. How would I check functionalitiy of quickstart?

Thanks

Dis-connect the port temp switch to disable quickstart.

To disable Quickstart you must ground the wht/blk from pack to engine ground, disconnecting wire will not disable it. Also check for any DC voltage on the yellow/red wire to pack while engine is running, if it has voltage you have a defective keyswitch or starter solenoid.

Either bad switch or defective/stuck t-stat, I will lean towards t-stat and say that head never reachs temp.

Re: 95 Ocean Pro 150 1200 -1300 idle rpm

Ocean Pro has been running great till Friday, left temp sensor grounded - engine idles at 1200 and then drops to 800 out of water - in water she drops to 650. Went fishing on 3 different ocassions - no timing knock (I assume that bringing engine out of warmup mode took care of timing advance), but on Friday timing knock returned 3500 - 4200
any ideas? I still have temp sensor grounded.

Thanks
Ed

Re: 95 Ocean Pro 150 1200 -1300 idle rpm

You have not addressed the problem, just circumvented it. You should fix or replace the temperature switch and find out if your thermostats are functioning properly, before you cause serious damage.

Re: 95 Ocean Pro 150 1200 -1300 idle rpm

Thermostats were removed over 10 years ago. We try to keep these engines cool - shallow bay system down here -seagrass, sand cause problems with thermostats in.
Run temp guage - guage reads 100 - 105 degrees.

Thanks
