Hello,
I could use some advice on what to do.
1995 Merc 200 carb. Had it five months.
Background:
Tattle tale never had strong stream (old man) On the water we noticed sputtering from the tattle tale as if under high pressure.
On the way back in I noticed a reduced throttle a couple times although position of throttle control remained the same A couple miles from ramp the engine reduced rpm to a crawl and a constant beep beep beep alarm sounded. The engine stalled and would not stay started for more than a few seconds with the alarm still going off with a constant beep beep beep as long as the key was turned to on... when it would run, NO water was coming from tattle tale. Found a tow in to the ramp.
Research suggests a cooling problem.
Replaced pump and impeller (not lower pump housing) - Still no water out of tattle tale, beeping comes back after about 20 seconds
Double check new impeller and water pump to ensure water tube is in correct position - It was
While lower unit was off:
Ensure all hoses are clear - They were and were dry
Blew compressed air into hose going to the two thermostats - air moved ok Blew air into starboard thermostat hose - air moved easily
Blew air into port side thermostat - air more restricted
Opened thermostat covers and found medium to heavy corrosion - removed thermostats (will replace before starting again)
Blew air into each and into both without thermostats - air moved freely
Blew air into hose going to the copper water intake tube - Not much pressure.
Pressure does build with thumb over water tube end but not much pressure overall
*Noted insides of hoses are dry Replaced lower unit - assured alignments are correct. Used belt to tighten muffs but still no water into engine.
Summarize: Possible restriction between thermostat intake hose and the water intake tube at the pump.
Next:
Replacing thermostats - because they need to be
Will run test after thermostats are replaced in a garbage bin rather than ear muffs.
Not sure how to get to any intake water filter if it has one.
Don?t want to look at the starboard side poppet valve yet because the hoses are dry and need water in them before the poppet would actuate under pressure. With no water making it there it rules out thermostats and poppet.
Don't know how to get into mid section and what to look for if I do...
Some chats say not to tighten the pump housing too tight. Ya, what does that mean? Some say just snug it down... - I tightened it. Could turn shaft with hands still... maybe loosen it up???
Feeling like it's time to bring it to the shop... Am I "hosed"? Is there hope?
I could use some advice on what to do.
