Last weekend, I was making my way down my canal to go out for a quick ride. While doing around 900 RPM's or so, my warning horn started blaring a solid tone (Overheat)I looked at the water preasure gauge and it showed only about 2 psi. Luckily for me, I was right near my ramp. This is the start of the third season with my current water pump impellar, so I figured that was going to be it. I got the boat home, dropped the lower unit and took apart the pump. Much to my surprise, the impellar and stainless steel housing looked near new !!! There is a good chance I picked up some crap in my slip when I started the engine as it is a very shallow slip. But if the pump was running dry, wouldnt it look burnt and obviously bad? When I ran the engine a few weeks ago with a garden hose hooked up to the flush port, it ran well. Preasure gauge then was about 15-20 lbs, depending on rpm. Bottom line is this: Could my pump be totally shot and "look" O.K.? I was expecting much worse than what I saw. And did I do any further damage to the engine for the short time it ran "dry"? Anyone may respond to Jimmri@aol.com. or here.

the odds of doing damage no longer than you ran it and at low rpms is remote. Have you checked you thermostat and while you had you lower unit off did you flush out the tubes to make sure they were not stopped up.

I would reccomend not using the back flush port to run your engine on. Get a pair of muffs and use them instead, when you hook the hose up to the back flusher your not really lubricating the impeller all that well and can damage it pretty quickly, I have seen it done many times. I don't think the cavity in the lower unit fills up and you pretty much run the pump dry.
