94 mercruiser carb question?

i have a 1994 mercruiser 3.0 with a 2 barrel carb,the engine usually runs ok,but has always seemed to have a very rich mixture,with black smoke exhaust,and eye watering fumes.It has aways covered the back of the boat with a black film after a day out on the water, at the end of last year, the kid had it out and got stranded , it just wouldent start ect.
So i get it out the other day to try and get it running,the first thing i do is put a new set of plugs in it,and it fires right up,but i still have an extremely rich mixter,,how can i solve this problem? ,or would i be better off replacing the carburator? the boat is almost 20 yrs old now,but has very few hours on it,and has always seemed to be too rich from day one, thanks for any help..............JL

Just pull the carbie off and strip and clean it just the way you would a car carbie. You might also want to check that the choke is coming off as it warms up....

Has anyone checked to see if your carb is properly adjusted? check not only choke plate, but jet size, fuel float level, and mixture. are your plugs fouled after 1 day on the water. Just things to look into if rebuilding the carbs.
