Hi Guys, I've learned a lot reading posts on related problems, but want to check with you guys to make sure I'm on the right path. My motor is a 1994 Johnson 88spl that I bought used in February this year. I'll be pretty thorough in my description of the problem rather than assume I know what's important and what's not.
About a month ago, while heading back to the landing at full throttle, the engine began to bog down as if it were going to stall. I could back off to half throttle and it would then run normally. Next time out, no problem, then the next, same problem at same point on trip back after fishing 1/2 day. Engine ran well cold, but after heating up would experience this "bogging"-and backing off throttle would solve it, acceleration from idle was good as usual.
I read a lot of posts here and did the easy stuff. Changed plugs, fuel ball/hose, decarbed engine, carb cleaner (not rebuild),etc. Next time out, no problems and we ran up and down the lake a lot, rather than my usual ride out, troll, ride back.
Next time out, the problem changed a bit. At the same point on the ride back to the landing, experienced a similar loss of power from 5500rpm to about 3200rpm (the tach was not working part of the time, off and on- had noticed this 2 months ago, before the problem started). This wasn't the bogging, but just a power loss that couldn't be solved by backing off the throttle. Power loss was throughout the full throttle range from idle on up. Boat would not accelerate to plane easily at all. Tried one more trip out later that week and had the same problem at the same point in the trip.
Here's what I've done so far. In checking things out, I discovered water leaking from the exhaust cover gasket, also a bit of moisture in the #3 cylinder. Changed gaskets and this problem fixed.
Checked compression and is good-120 on all cylinders. Checked for spark by pulling plug wires. After cold start, had spark at all cylinders. After letting motor run for about 15 minutes, pulling the #1 cylinder wire would not affect the engine idle, pulling all others would cause drop in rpm. Swapped plug wires 1/3 problem stayed on 1, swapped coils with the same result.
Am I looking at needing a new power pack here?
