I can start my motor while at high idle and when rpm are up I can put it in gear and throttle it out, but if I get it anywhere near idle or just in idle neutral the motor just dies then takes a second to get going again (all with no prop and in a water drum) and with prop on and motor under torque it doesnt go hardly at all maybe 2500-3000 rpms (est) Also I premix my fuel...

How are your carbs? You may have one or more leaking fuel.
With the cover and the engine off squeeze the primer while looking in the carbs.

Is this a VRO engine stored tilted up? If so pull the carb drains and flush the oil out of them.

Welcome to iboats.

Sounds like a classic case of clogged main jets, they are located in the very bottom of the float bowl behind the drain plugs and you will need a long skinny screw driver to get them out and it is best to sacrifice a screwdriver and grind it down till it just fits in the drain hole or you risk breaking off the ears on the jet.

Your engine has 3 sets of jets, idle-mid and high speed, the idles are on the top front, mids on the back top and high speed in the bottom of the float bowl.

You need to pull the carbs and one carb at a time remove and clean all the jets with a stranded copper wire that just fits the hole, keep the cover screw with the jet so you don't get them mixxed up and work on a newspaper so you don't get any new dirt on them.

Try this and see if it solves your problem and it is very bad for the engine to run it above 1500 rpm with no load on it.

Re: 94 Johnson 50hp J50TLERE need HELP!!

Thanks guys, after further inspection the problem was a blown head gasket!! I had it running held hand over top carb the motor wanted to die, did same test on bottom carb and it had no affect. So I then knew it was a compression problem. Now I need to know the head bolt torque specs on the head to cylinder? Any help is appreciated!

18 to 20 ft-lbs. Start from the center and work your way out.
