i've got a 1994 20' genesis with a mercruiser 180 hp 4.3L (?) inboard motor. i recently purchased it and am a green boater.

the first time on the water it worked nicely. it took a little starting fluid to get it started, but we drove it for about 1.5 hrs on the water, no hitch. then in the afternoon, we took it out and had troubles starting it. it seems to have enough battery (we tried hooking jumper cables up to the truck, but no help). when turning the key, the belts and such don't turn. only a grinding type noise. perhaps the starter isn't engaging or something like that? we cranked it quite a bit the 2nd time out while trying to start it and may have done some damage with too much cranking?

any ideas, thoughts, suggestions, etc would be most appreciated. the started seems a bit challenging to get to being that it's on the lower back end. i've changed many a car starters in my day, but like i've said i'm rather green to boating. i'm a bit nervous about the break out another thousand i've heard so much about...

thanks!
~mark

Sounds like a starter problem, but I can't tell you exactly what to do besides raplace it! Don't know much about their issues. Try searching on starter problems, or maybe someone else will stop by.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=012808

you can thank don,s for this post it really goes through the electric system

but you realy have other problems if you need to use starting fluid its a quick way to destroy your motor

the grinding is a really bad thing and you should correct it before you destroy the ring gear on the flywheel

there is a problem with the starter which is the first thing to correct

i would guess that the motor has not been serviced and needs a compleat tune up with NEW parts

tommays

My guess is the gringing he is talking about is the solenoid clicking. If you know how to use an electrical meter you can use dons troubleshooting diagram and probably find the problem. Dont start throwing parts at it until you find the problem.

Re: 94 Genesis mercruiser won't turn over

well, i took the boat to the boat shop and they said the starter was loose, and that the grinding noise when i turned the key was the starter grinding on the flywheel. they're suggesting a flywheel replacement, but were not very confident in their ability to replace the flywheel. i guess genesis didn't design the motor on these boats to be very removeable and repairable?

the person i bought the boat from said the spark plugs were replaced fairly recently. i'm interested in what others things would be good to have done to the motor while the flywheel is being replaced.

well if the flywheel is out just have them check everything in its area go over and replace the bad it cheaper now that later....

Theres a sayng " Pay me Now or Pay me later but either way your gonna Pay me" in other words your money will be given to a repair shop.....

"a boat is a hole in water in which you pour money"

I still love boating it 's like Chicago politics "You gotta Pay to Play"
