94 28hp SPL Johnson

Just bought this motor. Upon inspection I noticed the carburetor air intake port does not have any type of cover or screen to prevent any thing from being sucked in. Is this by design or am I missing a part? Motor runs great, just afraid I'm gonna suck something into the carb if I run it like this. Thanks for any input.

parts list doesn't show one if the engine is run with the cowl on all the time chances of sucking in " something" would be a rare occasion. ...just keep mice away

most carb I have worked on have no screen ... some old JW 3hp have them ... other have " air silencers ...but no screens

Much appreciated Crosbyman and flyingscott. I'll probably give the engine a thorough cleaning along with the cowling to remove any loose debris. Thanks again!!!

If there is deteriorating foam under the cowling, replace or eliminate it.
