93 Yamaha 40hp lower unit replacement

I was given a pristine 1993 Yamaha 40hp but without the lower unit. I have found a lower unit near by from a 1990 long shaft 3cyl. How do i know if this will fit my motor?

Well, it depends on the exact model on the 1990...that is they had different lower drive cases....several models of the 40's that year....but i did look and see that at least one is a match on part number with 93 model....if you can get the exact model number you can then
go to yamaha marine parts and pull them both up to compare...the illustrations are numbered to a parts list below each....easy. good luck
