I have a 20' 1993 Trophy with a 150 Force motor. I am in the process of removing the steering cable..I have the cable through the transom..and most of it pulled out under the "dash". The issue that I'm having is...I can not pull the 18" steering rod through the hole under the dash. I know I can pull it back through and cut the cable...but my other concern is...will I be able to snake the new cable through under the dash and back towards the motor...am I missing something here???

Any help would be appreciated!

That should be an easy pull from the front.Hook a pirce of strong rope to the end so you can re-pull the new cable.

Re: 93 Trophy - How to remove 17' steering cable

Thanks for the response...It's pouring here today so it'll be hard to get a good picture...
The cable pulls through the front - under the dash all the way up to the steering rod at the end of the cable. The hole under the dash is approx 3..maybe 3 1/2"...I thought it was going to be a breeze until it got to that rod....now I'm a bit stuck..can't make the hole larger without pulling the dash...any ideas...???

Don't understand what your trying to pull through. If you unhook the rack and pinion(4bolts) and remove all the stuff it should just pull out.

Re: 93 Trophy - How to remove 17' steering cable

Okay, It sounds like I'm obviously missing something here. I have the rack disconnected from the steering wheel and dash..I also have the 18" (+-) shaft disconnected from the motor. I pulled the rack from under the dash and was able to get 90% of the cable out..but I can't get a good angle on the shaft to get it to come through the hole under the dash - which is still inside the "gunnel" (side of the boat, correct?)

So I have..I'd say 15' of the cable out - pulled from under the dash. From what I see, the shaft can not be removed from the steering cable aside from cutting the cable. So basically it's stuck right now...
Does that help??

Unfortunately when the boat was assembled they used tie downs and cable clamps to secure the control cables. If it won't pull out,it might have a clamp or tie holding it in place.
You might have to use some force to pull it through.
The nut that holds the cable is hung up on a clamp so a bit of wiggling and twisting might help.
Otherwise cut it.Get in there with a flash light and see what's holding it.I can see from the tank acces on my boat to where the cables go through the bulkhead.J

I had the same issue. But I took mine out after I removed the side panel where your controls are mounted. That is where you pull the aft section of the cable out and the fore portion of the cable out from. The angles work from there. It is also a 16' rx-4 steering cable. Made by teleflex now a days...

Looked at your posts J_K...Impressive!!! I'll have to send my boat up to you when you're done so you have another project to do!! :) Ok..so I have a 93 Trophy Bowrider...I think it's the only one in existance!!! I've searched all over the net and could find one...Anyway...there is no access panel on the side..currently no access to see whats going on behind the wall...I may have to make one! I'm hoping to get out there and play a bit more later..the rain is finally slowing down here in FLA

Re: 93 Trophy - How to remove 17' steering cable

Actually my buddy has two of those boats. They only made them for one year I think. I have looked up you boat on the trophy website and sorry I was wrong you do not have the access panel like mine. My buddy that has the same boat as yours had to change out hiw cable this year. I believe he pulled it out from the back. That is after climbing in the console hatch up under the dash and rotated it fore then climbed back under dash from the cockpit of the boat, (the fabric covering under sterring wheel), to help feed it through. It took I think three people to do it though. On under dash feeding, one under sterring wheel feeding, and one at back pulling. Sounds complicated but it took some time. I think they also need to cut the hole under the dash larger for clearence.

Have to remember these are install when the boat is in two pieces, top and bottom. So installation clearences are a bit bigger and deffinately different.

I was wrong, the cable is a 17' cable.

Here is a link to the parts manual for your boat. http://www.trophycustomercare.com/catalogs_index.htm I use it to help see how things go together. Also to figure out where things are. You can still order most of the parts for these boats.

Re: 93 Trophy - How to remove 17' steering cable

Thanks for the suggestion JerryJerry05!!!
Still another rainy day..didn't get a chance to go "play" yet. While I'm waiting for dryer weather...I'm curious what you guys know about the rotary system as compared to the rack system. It appears that the rotary cable is much easier to install....typically do I use the same size cut out in the dash?? Money's tight..I'd love to get a NFB system..and the NFB rotary system is a bit more affordable....what are your thoughts??

Re: 93 Trophy - How to remove 17' steering cable

Finally had clear weather and time to play...ummm all day :) Found the rack cable/bezel kit down at SeaFarer Marine in Largo..got the kit for $135..not too bad. I did see it online for $111.00 plus $10 for shipping...but I had to have it today! :)
After looking at the hold under the dash..It appeared that someone replaced the cable at least once before..the original hole was expanded a few inches. By seeing that it became clear to me that the only way to get the old cable out and new cable in was to drop the dash board. Once I did that the old cable came out pretty easy. The new cable was a little bit of a hassle..but after finding that the pull rope got caught on something in the side wall...every thing went pretty good after that. Tomorrow, I have to check all of the wires under the dash to make sure I didn't yank anything..adjust some of the dash stuff...and then attempt to fire the beast up...should be interesting!!!
I want to thank you guys for your help!!
