Hey guys
I want to try and drop the cover so i can get the shift rod out and clean it up as its binding. This design unfortunately isnt a split cover so i will only be able to drop it a bit but i think it will be ok.
Anyway so ive removed the cover below this and then the 2 bolts from the underside to the lower engine cover. Removed the 4 bolts under the engine and its wiggly but cant drop it at all. removed the cover and 2 bolts holding the cables comming in for shift and throttle. Still no joy. The only thing i can think is that is getting held up by the seal and im a bit reluctant to go hanging off it to pop this off in case theres something im missing ?

That VRO model won't generate much slack when the lower cowling is loosened. Some of the earlier (non-VRO models) had just a little more slack in the lower cowls. Not sure exactly what you want to do, but the term referred to as the shift rod is the 20" long rod that screws into the lower unit. It won't come out thru the top of the engine. You have to drop the lower unit. Perhaps you are referring to the shift lever. If it's the lever you are trying to get out, you may have to remove the intake manifold.

Sorry i did mean the lever from the housing thats part of the block. In the end i removed the intake and the carbs to get the bolt and the clamp off then i had to hacksaw part of the lower cover ribbing off as twisting the cowl wasnt giving enough slack. Got the shift lever out and it was the bush at the end that was binding causing it to be hard to change gear. I removed it, gave it a quick sand, cleaned the tube out, re greased everything. Seems a bit better now but its a ridiculous the level of dismantling just to get at the lever. I can see why they changed to a split lower cover.

Welcome to the wonderful world of OMC. Try replacing the thermostats on one'a those motors. First try I guarantee you'll give up'n go home in tears ...

They kinda wave it in yer face. Seriously. For example you can see the nut/bolt, it's right there. But can you get a wrench on it, or take it all the way out? Not!

Well, not before removing another, unrelated part.

Pisses ya off but tbh I don't think they're any worse than the other manufacturers.

After all how are they s'posed to make any money if'n we can fix our own sh*t?

Your problem is no doubt the reason that OMC put a grease zurk on that casting sleeve area.

indeed, unfortunately the boat/motor has sat around for 7 years before i convinced my dad to let me use it so its just getting maintainence now. pumping grease through that nipple was only making a mess. should be a bit better now ive manually greased it to start with and will keep it going
