i've got a 93 Force 40 hp engine. after charging the battery, i crank the engine up. if it does not start in the first cranking session, the next time i crank it, it just drags and does not get enough revolutions to start it at all. i've got a new battery, the cables have been checked and clean. i'm thinking its the starter, but wanted some more opinions before i replace it.

Re: 93 Force 40 - dragging starter

I recently purchased an 87' Force 125. It was acutally funny because when the guy i bought it from was showing me the motor originally, the starter had **** the bed. It was new but defective. The symptoms the dead starter showed were a grinding noise, and it almost felt like battery was dead like you say. The starter didnt produce enough power to engage the armature up to the flywheel. and as we cranked it further, it produced less and less motion. he took it in the next day and they replaced the starter, fired right up.

Seems to be lots of Force starter problems.
Probably is the starter.Be sure all connections are clean and tight, don't forget the ground side.May be able to rebuild.A good shop can test it and rebuild.

sounds like that is the culprit based upon the feedback. i'll give that a try. its a 93, the original one i'm sure, so it's had a long life already. as arnold might say, i'll be back to let everyone know if the verdict is correct. i'll get one on order tonight.
