I own a 19' 1993 crownline bow rider. The floor and stringers are bad. I have been reading alot and learning about how I will determine how far I will have to go. My question is what size, where and how to take some core samples. I have had a terrible floor repair made to finish the season, so I will not start till late fall. Thanks in advance Spoon

Re: 93 Crownline repairs

Welcome to iBoats! If you've been reading then you KNOW that chances are if your deck and stringers are bad there is a very good chance your transom is too! Your first decision is do you want to keep the boat? If yes, the next question is how much time, effort and money are you willing to invest to bring her back to life? Time- probably about 200 hrs. Effort - depends on your previous experiences. Money - Stringers, Deck, and Transom if you do them with wood and fiberglass will run about $1,500. If you use composite material it could double.

Just want to give you an estimate of what you're looking at. You will get all the help you need here on the forum and YOU CAN DO IT, If you want to. It's your decision.

This is a good thread to show you what you're in for.

Re: 93 Crownline repairs

I understand the situation, the money, and the time. I have a nice shop and I am experienced in all types of fabrication except fiberglass, I have zero experience with that. This is my 4th boat, but I do plan on keeping it. It has a 305 with the alpha 1 gen 2. The motor has 750 hrs but still runs strong. I have downloaded the manuals and feel confident I can do any task associated with restoration--if I don't do something stupid. That is why I was inquiring about the best location and method to take core sample to determine the extent of the damage.

In the engine compartment get as low as you can on the engine mounts and the stringers and take a 3/8 drill bit and drill about 3/4 of an inch into them. if you get dark wet shaving then you know you got a problem. Do the same on the transom at several spots around the outdrive on the inside of the transom. As for the deck soft spots most of the guys on here replace the entire deck if there are any soft spots but I suppose you could just replace the areas that are soft. Check out this guys thread. He has an I/O restore and did an Oustanding job.

After I drill the the holes and find out the is a problem I will know that removal and replacement will be necessary, but if I get dry solid shavings what is the proper way to seal the holes?

3M 5200 Find it @ any Marine Supply Kinda Pricey but every boater should own a tube of it. Seals any hole permanently above or below the waterline.
