I have a 1993 Evinrude ocean pro that runs great 90% of the time. every once in a while it will slow down all of a sudden. w/ out touching the throttle it will pick back up to full speed. had carbs. cleaned still same problem. had compression checked. all cylinders seem to have good compression. all cylinders has good spark, but when you pull the the wire from the plug on cylinder # 2 there is no drop in the engine. trigger and stator checks out. any help would be great.

Thanks,

Double check the compression in #2, if its ok...

then use a gap tester on #2 sparky, you need 3/8th's inch spark.
If you don't own one, get an adjustable gap tester from autozone.

If thats ok, then rebuild the #2 carb.

If it fails the spark gap test , try swapping a known good coil from another cylinder and see if the problem moves with #2 coil.
If it does examine all the coils, looks for tiny cracks.
I find its better to remove a coil to examine it, look at the bottom where its potted for cracks, at the same time sand the ground contact area to new shiny metal.

Try swapping spark plug wires too.

thanks for the response. I have done all of this w/ no luck. I even swapped the carbs on cylinder # 2 for # 1.

huh...ok it may be that pulling the plug on #2 is unrelated to the running problem. I would treat them seperately for now.
Does pulling other plug wires besides #2 cause an rpm drop?
Does #2 show a wet plug ?
Have you put a timing light on it to see if its firing?

On the running problem, rebuilding carbs may not be the same as cleaning, theres new parts that should be installed included in each kit.

Intermittent WOT run problems can be hard to trace unless you get it on the water with some tools and someone to drive whilst you pop the hood,

put a timing light on it to see if its dropping the spark.

Try pumping the bulb too.
Check that the bulb isn't collapsing.
MAke sure tank vent is clear.
Have you changed any filters yet?
Examined the fuel from the tank for water?

And "compression SEEMS to be good" isn't very clear, do you have a guage?
Have you tried some seafoam?

yes when I pull any other wire the rpm drops. had all carbs rebuilt. you can pull plug #2 after running engine and the plug is wet. I change the fuel filter after every trip. had the compression checked w/ gauge. compression is 120. I have not put a timing light on it. but I can see good spark w/ engine running.
