95% of the time it idles great & runs great at WOT, but at times it acts up when going to start it like the timimg is way off, is that possible when it idles & runs great other times? or is it more likely a wiring issue, nothing has been hacked up or messed with, the problem has been going on for several yrs, thanx Dan

Welcome to iboats Dan.

What exactly do you mean by acting like the timing is off?

Does it backfire?
Does it cough? Sneeze?
Just won't fire?
Act like it is flooded?

Not sure how to describe it, at times it acts like the battery is dead & then just like that its fine, have had the same issue for several yrs, just getting tired of it, twice we actually had to return from the Lake, I have a big block Chevy, that acts the same way when its hot & you go to start it.

Could be any of the following:

1. Bad battery. Have you had it load tested?

2. Bad battery cable connection or bad battery cable. Disconnect all the battery cable connections and clean with a wire brush. This includes the ground cables.

3. Bad starter. You can take it apart and clean or replace the brushes. If the problem is the windings themselves, you'll either have to replace it or have it rebuilt.

The BBC could be the timing is off.Same with the 40.
Do what pnwboat says then.Do a compression/spark test.Low comp on 1 cylinder can cause this.
Sometime flipping the brushes help.J
