I'm trying to replace the water pump in my 92 Johnson tracker. It's a 60hp. I'm confused as to what I have to do as far as the shift rod is concerned. I'm clear on taking the lower unit off and replacing the impeller housing etc I'm just not positive A. If there is a bolt holding the shift rod or do I have to do something with the linkage. Any help would be appreciated. I would really hate to have to bring it to a mechanic for this the stripers are almost here.

Find the shift lever on the motor, it goes accross the block near lower carburetor.-------Find the hitch pin on that lever and remove it.--------------Push that lever to the port side and rotate it.-------Shift rod will now be released.

Well I followed your instructions and the lower unit slid right off. Now when I put it back on it got stuck in gear. Took it off and put back on and now I'm in nuetral and can't shift into forward or reverse.

Did you turn the shift rod ????--------It should be just as easy to install as it was to take off !

It is possible that the shift rod turned while I had it out. How do I know the position it should be in once it's back in.

Turning the shift rod will change the shift adjustment.----There is a dimension from gearcase mounting surface to the the centre of the pin hole.---This is measured in neutral.----Find your dimension using ---google ---Search for --johnson shift rod height---- It is all there for you.
