Roger, On my '89 Johnson 60HP,per manual, push/pry shift linkage in toward motor. This will allow linkage to spread at the connection between the linkage and the shift rod. Shift rod can then slide down and out of linkage. I used a small pry bar to push in on linkage, while holding/moving L/U. Take note of orientation of top of shift rod as this will be important when re-installing. I removed bottom carb when I did mine (first time). Extra work, but I could see how things worked!
