91, 15 hp Evinrude LOUD!?

I have a 91, 15hp Evinrude and I am told it is louder than it should be. I am also told there is a problem with this year power head to exaust gasket blowing often. I have rebuilt V8 motors and am sure I'm capable of replaceing this gasket. Any suggestions, shortcuts, things I should know or input would be appreciated.

If you've rebuilt Johnson/Evinrude V8's,I suspect you won't have a problem.<br /><br />Also why are you doing this because you are told it is louder than it should be?Who says?<br /><br />Are you loosing power,stalling,flooding out?No starting?<br /><br />Then go looking.<br /><br />DHP

No, there is no problems other than it is too loud. Louder, by far , than other Johnson/Evinrude 15 hp I have heard. I rebuilt automobile V8's, not boat motors. Thought I would seek some advice and or sugestions from those that have rebuilt that specific motor or had that problem.

What you might be missing is the exhuast housing baffle. It's a little plate with holes in it. It fits at the bottom of the midsection where the lower unit and midsection mate. Easy to drop out if the lower unit is removed. Might make the engine a little more noisey.<br /><br />And by the way....welcome to iboats!

Thanks OBJ. I remember seeing the exaust housing baffle when I replaced the empellar after purchasing the motor. Pretty sure I made a conscious effort to get it back in properly. Don't have a manual yet, but I do have a hard head! My moto is "when all else fails buy a manual". Thanks again for the welcome!

LOL!! Look under my sig line Riffle.<br /><br />How loud is loud? Sound like exhaust noise or what? When I put the baffle in, I use a small piece of paper to jam it in the slots so it won't fall out.

On the top front of the exhaust housing is (2) 1/4" Phillips headed screws, one on each side. These go into the upper motor mounts inside the housing. Right in front of them is a rubber grommet that seals the pivot shaft protrusions that go into the mounts. I have seen this grommet get cracked & it will increase the exhaust noise somewhat. But it also usually is a source of leaking black unburned oil which is inside the exhaust housing. Also many times the rubber mounts will also go bad. If so, the whole motor unit & housing is loose in relationship to the clamp/pivot bracket unit.

Where I hang my hat is just west of I-5 about 1/2 way between Portland OR & Seattle WA.<br /><br />I have 5 of these motors that I have repaired one way or the other & used for documentation when writing a how to article. That's a good article machinist....real good. Took some time and effort to put that together and if I was you....I'd brag....<br /><br />My son just moved up to the Redmond area. I was stationed at McCord AFB way back when. Beautiful country up your way.
