Hello everyone,

I'm at my wits end and I'm hoping someone on here can help me with my problem.

I have a 1990 Lund Baron with a 4.3 mercruiser on it. The boat ran fine for me all summer until last my trip out 2 weeks ago. While out fishing I was not able to get the motor to run over 2200 rpms. If I gave it more gas it would sputter and then ultimately stall out. I was able to keep it under 2200 and get back into the dock. After that day I replaced a rusted distributor cap and rotor and cleaned up the shaft on the distributor. I took the boat out to try it and now I was able to give it full throttle without the boat stalling out, however it only would run about 1200 rpms and seemed to be running rough.

After that I realized that I was almost completely out of gas so I put 16 gallons of gas in it and a can of seafoam thinking that was the issue, I tried it again and same thing 1200 rpms would give it full throttle and it wouldn't shut off just ran rough.

So I took the boat to a buddy of mine who was helping me and we replaced the spark plugs which were definitely well past there life. Took boat out and same thing 1200 rpms. He did a compression test and everything was good there 140 pounds in all 6 cylinders. He disconnected the out drive and started the boat and it still ran rough. We pulled the carburator off disassembled and cleaned it and it still is running rough. I put another 30 gallons of gas and 2 more cans of seafoam and a can of dry gas in it.

The motor also seems to have a pretty good shake to it when running it in neutral. It will run full rpm range in neutral but does have a shake. When the out drive was pulled off my buddy inspected the exhaust and everything appears to be in order with no broken flappers or anything. Also there is no fuel filter anywhere other than the small inline filter going into the carb, that I pulled out and cleaned but it wasn't very dirty at all to begin with.

Does anyone have any idea what the issue could be before I put this boat in the bottom of the river lol.

Sounds to me that the boat has received next to NO maintenance and the motor now has some issues. Pulled the carb and cleaned it but did not rebuild, also the motor has no fuel filter except an inline filter (which it should not have).

You should have a fuel pump (item 1) which looks like the one in the link below and it also has a filter (item 2) inside. Either your fuel filter in the pump is clogged or the carb is clogged

You also now have 3 cans of snake oil (seafoam) and one can of alcohol in 46 gallons of gas. Strongly suggest not putting anymore of the crud in your tank, it will only make matters worst

You're 100% correct. I'm sure that there wasn't much maintenance done on my boat prior to me owning it. (I just bought it this spring) not rebuilding the carb was done more out of lack of planning than anything else. We were just trying to get any dirt and junk out of the carb without exceeding anyone's abilities with disassembly of the carb. I had no idea that there was a filter on the fuel pump and I am going to order a replacement for that right now along with a new filter for the inline before the carb.

Also I didn't know that seafoam was bad for the motors. I have never heard anything bad about it. Thank you for the reply.

Other opinions differ but seafoam is made from
PALE OIL 40-60%
NAPTHA 25-35%
IPA 10-20%

You always start with a basic tune-up before chasing other operating issues. I see nothing in your post regarding checking "firing order" before and after replacing spark plugs. I see nothing about checking and adjusting ignition timing. A "shaking" engine indicates one or more cylinders is not firing. Have you done a spark check to verify you have spark on each cylinder? If this engine sat for any period of time it could have some sticky valves. Any engine will seem to run fine in neutral since there is no load on it. And DO NOT rev that engine to red line in neutral.

Thank you for the reply. Yes I have checked the firing order a couple different times. Everything is in line there. I did pull all plugs after running it and all 6 plugs appeared to have been firing and all 6 plugs look good now after replacement. Did a compression check and all 6 cylinders were at 140. I never revved above about 3500 rpms in neutral.
